Celebrate Pool Safety Month With An All Ages Event

In honor of pool safety month, the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure
Services is teaming up with the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter
and Paragon Pools to sponsor a free event on Sunday, May 10. The event will be
from noon to 4 p.m. at the Municipal Pool, located on 431 E. Bonanza Road, and
is open to all ages.

The overwhelming success of the inaugural event last year convinced us to

repeat it this year, says Ron Rios, community education specialist of Red Cross.
Last year, 300 people children and their families had a great time learning
about pool safety and enjoying the water.

Lifeguards from the city of Las Vegas will provide safety information and
instructions. Children will learn to float like a duck while singing, dancing and
playing games to win prizes. Each attendee will receive a ducky souvenir.

Local celebrities, television personalities and area mascots will be attending.

Children have a natural attraction to water, says aquatic coordinator of the city
of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, Scott Irvine. Understanding that
attraction is an important aspect in teaching parents and children safe ways to
interact in and around bodies of water.

"Water-related activities should always be approached with safety in mind,

regardless of whether the activities are recreational, competitive or
entertainment- related and whether or not they occur in backyard pools, public
arenas, beaches or lakes. Water activities should be a life-enhancing experience,
not life-threatening."

Joe Vassallo, president of Paragon Pools, says, Water-related activities should

always be approached with safety in mind, regardless of whether the activities
are recreational, competitive or entertainment- related and whether or not they
occur in backyard pools, public arenas, beaches or lakes. Water activities should
be a life-enhancing experience, not life-threatening."
