4 Man Tent – Which One Is Best For You

If you are planning on buying a 4 man tent, then there are a few things that you
need to consider. Tents come in all shapes and sizes, and are designed for many
different uses. Whether you are summer camper or climbing the Rockies, there
will be a tent to suit your needs.
These are some of the considerations.
 Size of the tent
 Type of use
 The conditions you intend to use it
 Which style of tent
Obviously you need to decide on the
size of the tent. Usually the tent size is
measured by the number of people it
will sleep. Therefore it would be fair to
assume that a 4 man tent is suitable
for 4 people. That is the maximum
number of people, and usually it is a
very tight squeeze. Something akin to
sardines in a can.
Often people will buy a four man tent to be used by two people. This will allow
enough room to put their gear inside the tent, and still be able to move a little.
Obviously if you are an alpine climber, space and weight will be important, so the
smaller the tent the better. But if the tent is going to travel in the back of your
pickup, get something you will be comfortable in.
When deciding on your tent you must consider comfort and safety. Always
choose a tent that will handle the worst possible conditions that you think you
might encounter.
Tents are usually rated as 3 and 4 season tents. If you are planning to use the
tent in spring, summer and fall, then a 3 season tent should be OK. If you are
planning on doing some camping in the winter, then you will need a 4 season
tent. These will be a little more expensive, but stronger. They will have a more
durable fabric coating, and probably more poles.
Tents generally fall into two categories – Domes and Tunnels. Domes are
freestanding tents that do not need to be staked down in order to stand up.
However it is usually in you best
interest to stake the tent down.
Most of 4 season tents are
constructed this way as they are
stronger, and have a curved surface
where no snow can collect. The
tunnel tents are a modified design of
the dome, and require less fabric
and usually use fewer poles.
Your decision on which 4 man tent is
best for you will not be easy because
of the number of brands and models available. These points should make your
job a little easier.
