Founded in the 5th century and spread over 118 small islands, Venice became a major maritime power in
the 10th century. The whole city is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece in which even the smallest
building contains works by some of the world's greatest artists such as Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto,
Veronese and others.

Mount Etna (Italian:Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin: Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on
the east coast of Sicily, Italy, close to Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between
the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the tallest active volcano on the European continent, currently
3,329 m (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions. It is the highest mountain in Italy south of
the Alps. Etna covers an area of 1,190 km2 (459 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. This makes it by
far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next
largest, Mount Vesuvius. Only Mount Teide in Tenerife surpasses it in the whole of the EuropeanNorthAfrican region. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the
god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located
underneath it.Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of
activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the
lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity
and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations. In June
2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of
2008) five distinct cratersthe Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the new mouth, and the Southeast Crater
Complex . Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small
holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive
and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. In contrast, flank eruptions can
occur down to a few hundred metres altitude, close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous
villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions. Since the year AD 1600, at least 60
flank eruptions and countless summit eruptions have occurred; nearly half of these have happened since the
start of the 20th century, and since 2000, Etna has had four flank eruptionsin 2001, 20022003, 2004
2005, and 2008-2009. Summit eruptions occurred in 2006, 20072008, JanuaryApril 2012, and again in
JulyOctober 2012.

Ever seen in my entire life as a splendor of spring this morning at sunrise ... From the window we see
the vast and gentle slope of the ancient city in all gardens and vineyards, under the thick green
divined just a few traces of the great and populous neighborhoods in the city of the past. Only at the
southern slope of this green and flowered rises the Temple of Concordia, in the east of the few
remains of the Temple of Juno; but from the eye does not see the ruins of other temples ... instead
runs south towards the sea.

The temple of Castor and Pollux, of which you can see the
four columns of the North-West, occupies a small plateau
overlooking the garden Kolymbetra on one side and V on the
other port. It is actually a reconstruction built in 1836 with
materials collected on the spot that the remains of the
original coating of white stucco and plaster, visible here than

The temple of Asclepius, dedicated to the god of medicine, was visited by the sick,
for it was near the town about 1,500 meters (Polybius). Cicero tells that inside there
was a huge statue of Apollo, although the building was modest and the decorations
were not up to the canons of the time. Peculiar aspect was the presence in the
vicinity of the temple of a clinic, a sacred grove and a source where the pilgrims
could perform the rites of purification.
There are many other temples in the city: Demeter, Volcano, Athena, Isis, Chthonic Deities, such that

The Temple of Olympic Zeus is built after the victory over the Carthaginians at
Himera (480-479) according to the greek costume as an offering of thanksgiving to
Zeus: a monument of victory, for its proportions, was one of the greatest antiquity.
The temple is essentially a Doric building. It was pseudoperiptera form, ie not
surrounded by free-standing columns, but by half-seven in fourteen short sides and
long sides, which punctuated the development of a continuous wall, which included
the semi turned into internal pillars. Between the columns were placed in support of
the giants of the temple.
