This week in FLK..

We had visions of cowboys and astronauts!

In Language: We reviewed how to print the lower case letters : c,o,s,v,w,t,c,a,d and
began the DIVE letters, the b,h,l,m,n,p and the r. The dive letters dive down, then
bounce back up to continue.
We reviewed our reading, writing skills and some sight words in Miss Evans morning
message.
In the Surprise Bag this week, Charlie brought his monkey, Alvina brought a
kitchen (not just the kitchen sink!) and Molly brought her horse, Buttercup.
Gym: We watched Dance Extremes Triple Threat group perform. They sing, dance
and act. On Friday, we headed back out on the big kids climber and the back yard.
Religion: We enjoyed traces of God in the summer weather, on the farm and in our
friends. We celebrated mass as a school community for the last time this school
year. We discussed Chris Hadfields advice to Become the person you want to be.
Seemingly simple advice, but profoundly difficult!
Science: We watched what a hen does when a rooster crows!
As a school, we chatted with Commander Chris Hadfield on Skype from Alberta. On
behalf of our class, Peter asked, Can you hula hoop in space? And if so, if you were
to slide out of the hula hoop, would it keep spinning? Commander Hadfield
commented that ours was truly a question from the children. He said the hula
hoop would stay in place relative to your body so you wouldnt have to twirl your
hips to keep it up, but that it would be difficult to move your body to get the hula
hoop moving initially. Once it was turning, the hula hoop would turn or spin forever
unless stopped. Wild! At the end of the Skype session, Mr. Santandrea asked
Commander Hadfield if he had any advice for the children. Commander Hadfield
told the children to decide the type of person they want to be and then begin
working on it. He said he didnt just say he wanted to be an astronaut; he worked
very hard every day in several different ways to make it happen. He confirmed
that we are our own boss and we CAN be who and what we want to be. Just like we
say in the Cub Den, we are, in fact, large and in charge!

In Art: Miss Evans completed a SECRET project with the children (ahem!) and
painted paper mache models of the planets.
In Music, Drama and Dance: The second Year students began rehearsing for
their Growing Ceremony.
In Mathematics: We began a general review. We reviewed counting, numbers,
printing numbers and reading information on simple graphs.
In Personal and Social Development: As many of the events this week were
TOTALLY out of routine, we worked on staying flexible and co-operative.
In Inquiry/Directed Play: We went on our final field trip of the year to Circle R
Ranch. Thank you to Mrs. Ferreira, Mr. Farrugia, Mr. Circelli, Mrs. Wilkusz and
Mrs. Mazariegos for attending and helping! Each of us rode a pony, went on a hay
wagon ride, and learned about sheep, pigs, goats and hens. It was a great morning!
