Simulation of Communication Systems: Performance Evaluation

There are two performance estimations in this paper which are SNR estimation and BER
estimation. The SNR estimation is the widely used performance measurement for analog
communication systems. The SNR estimate becomes

for case an amplitude scaling and time delay do not contribute to waveform distortion. For BER
estimation consists of four techniques which are Monte Carlo, variance reduction technique,
semi-analytic simulation and strictly mathematical analysis. The Monte Carlo technique is
flexibility in applicable to any system. It often prohibitively long on computer execution times
and can measure using confidence intervals for accuracy of BER estimate.
The variance-reduction techniques are the faster methods of BER estimation. For the
variance reduction techniques, importance sampling, tail extrapolation, large deviation theory,
extreme value theory and others have applicable to many systems. But, it must select biasing
schemes, thresholds and often more of an art than a science. In addition, those techniques are
variable from extremely short to prohibitively long on computer execution times. Those are often
very difficult to access for accuracy of BER estimate.
The semi-analytic simulation is restricted largely to systems with linear receivers and
AWGN channels. It also need conditional BER statistics and has very short execution times. This
technique is exact to within accuracy of DSP models. Lastly, the strictly mathematical analysis is
typically restricted to highly idealized systems. It also numerous and well known and zero
computer execution times. The accuracy of BER estimate for this technique is exacted.
