I.

Purpose
a. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to
fractions.
II. Objectives
a. The students will be able to determine what a half, third,
forth, and a whole is. This includes 2/4 being the same as
.
III. Procedure
a. Introduction
i. Have students come to the carpet and sit quietly.
ii. Ask students what we have been talking about this
week. I am looking for key words such as fractions,
whole, half, and equal parts.
1. Show what a whole and a half looks like using
the manipulative.
b. Development
i. We will be adding one 1/3, , and 2/4 today. Ask the
students how we would split something if we wanted
to share it with three people; four people. Show how
to do this with the manipulative.
ii. Read Jump, Kangaroo, Jump.
iii. The students will now complete the collecting eggs
worksheet. Explain the worksheet to them and do a
problem as an example. Put an example on the Elmo
for the students to refer too.
iv. Once the students have completed the worksheet,
have then turn the worksheet in on the chair and sit
on the carpet quietly.
c. Summary
i. Have students come to the carpet and sit quietly.
ii. Watch video on fractions.
iii. The students will wrap up todays lesson by creating
a flipbook. The flipbook book as already been folded
and cut for them. Explain what the students should
do and show them an example. Put the example on
the board for the students to refer too.
iv. When the students are done, they may put their
flipbook in their folder and finish work from today or
use their word sort words in sentences in their
writing journal until recess.

e. Book Jump, Kangaroo, Jump.

V. Adaptations
a. There are 8 different behavior plans going on. Keep a close
eye on those students. Josh is allowed to use his chewy
whenever he thinks he needs it.
VI. Evaluation
a. There will be no formal assessment for this lesson. The
assessment for the unit will be on Friday. I will use the
worksheet the students complete as a check for
understanding.
