In-line V Radial Opposed Cylinder 5. Opposed Piston
The first V-type engine, a 2-cylinder vee twin, was
built in 1889 byDaimler. In 1914, Cadillac was the first company in the United States to use a V-8 engine in its cars. V engine is over head camshaft type(OHC). The V will be different angles in different engines but the common angles are 45, 60 and 90 degrees. an engine has more than 6 cylinders, it will be manufactured as a V engine as a straight 8 or straight 10 will not fit in the engine compartment. The V engine is a compact engine per cylinder. The length required to house an inline 6 cylinder engine will house a V12 cylinder engine.
The V engine produces more torque at lower RPM
ranges probably because of the power stroke coming from 2 sides of the crankshaft. The angle between the opposing banks of cylinders is usually 60 or 90 degrees for a V6 and 90 degrees for a V8. The V-type of engine has two rows of cylinders set normally at aninety degree angle to each other. Advantages include it's short length, great rigidity of the block, its heavy crankshaft, and attractive low profile. This is a tried and tested engine design with huge performance potential. With this type of engine it is possible to have a very high compression ratios, without block distortion under load.
In sports applications, having the engine as low to the
floor as possible increases the car's handling characteristics, as it will naturally have a lower centre of gravity. Also having a strong engine with built in rigidity can mean the difference in endurance races, making the V type engine design an idealchoice for Motorsport applications. This makes it a strong and robust design for high performance applications and is used in F1 for instance. Also with it's resistance to torsional vibration, the engine characteristics produce a smooth and refined engine. Another attribute for this compact engine design is a shorter car length without losing passenger room.
