The PGH Division of Urology,
Home to pioneers and visionaries:
July 23, 1910 The first cystolithotomy was performed by Dr. John
M. McDill, the first head of the department of Surgery

1920 The first radical prostatectomy by Dr. Jose Eduque

1948 Dr. Luis Torres Jr. introduced retropubic prostatectomy, as


well as transurethral resection of the prostate, the use of the
cystoscope and retrograde pyelography

1968 The first kidney transplant in the Philippines was


performed by a team led by Dr. Enrique Esquivel

Forefront of research and field advancement:

1956 Dr. Clemente Sta Romana presented a series of 25 male


patients with urethral strictures who underwent perineal
urethroplasty

1959 The use of peritoneal dialysis was started by the Urology


service

1961 Dr. Luis Torres Jr, Januario Estrada and Enrique Esquivel Jr.
reported 5 cases of Cushings syndrome who underwent bilateral
subtotal adrenalectomy
