Recommended books (Any standard control textbook will do)

1) Ogata K, Modern Control Engineering, Prentice Hall, 1990. (Closest to material.)
2) Franklin and Powell, Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems, Addison Wesley. (Also
good, especially for root-locus.)
3) Dorf R C, Modern Control Systems, Addison Wesley, 1986.
4) Dazzo and Houpis, Linear Control System Analysis & Design: Conventional and
Modern, McGraw Hill, 1981.
5) Kuo B C, Automatic Control Systems, Prentice Hall, 1982.
6) Schaum Outline Series, Feedback and Control Systems, McGraw Hill. (Good frequency
domain & stability exercises.)
7) Blanger P R, Control Engineering - A Modern Approach, Saunders College, 1995.

Course Assessment
Final mark = 0.75 Exam Mark + 0.25 Class mark.
Class Mark = 0.30 (Test 1 + Test 2) + 0.2 Lab mark + 0.2 Tut mark.
Tutorial mark will be spot tests (in lecture period) and hand-in tutorial
Duly Performed Requirements
1) Satisfactory performance in the laboratories and tutorials is required before a DP certificate
will be issued.
2) A sub-minimum test mark average of 30% is required.
Contact details: Prof. E. Boje, Room 1-04, boje@ukzn.ac.za
Please note. The class is very big and you should keep this in mind when seeking individual
consultation. Preferred consultation times are during the tutorials and optional tutorial
session. At other times, I will endeavour to see any student seeking an appointment within a
week.
