VOLUME 4
RAYMOND KENNEDY
NEW HAVEN
PUBLISHED FOR THE
DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOOY, YALE UNIVERSITY
BY THE
1945
PREFACE
Fifteen years ago, Professor George p.
Murdook began to assemble a olassified world,:",
wide ethnogreph10 blbllography. In 1941, the
seotion'of th1s blbllography on North Amerioa
was pub11shed as Volume 1 of the Yale Anthropologioal Studies. WhEm the present author
oame to Yale in 1932, Professor Murdook turned
over to him the material he had gathered on
the East Indies, and this bcame the base for
the .oomprehensive bibliography presented here.
The author has examined all the East Indian
publioations in the, Yale Uni versi ty Llbrary,
and has elso surveyed the colleotions in the
Library of Congress and other leading American
libraries. With the assistanoe of a grant
from the Institute of Human Relations at Yale,
he spent the swmner of 1938 in the Netherlands,
working on the library colleotions there. It
is quite oertain, therefore, that the bibliography here published represents a olose approximation to oomplete ooverage of all extent
books and periodical artieles conoerning the
peoples and oultures of Indonesia.
Several bibliographioal works on this area
have been published, the most exhaustive one
being the great Reportorium ~ de l!teratu'1r
betreffende de Nederlandsohe kolonien, whieh
lists all publieations issued between 1595 end
1932. Pro Robert Heine-Geldernhas prepared a
seleoted bibliographyon Southeast Asia, including the Indies, which will be published
soon by the Amerioan COillloil of Learned Sooieties. The Netherlands Study Unit at the Library of Congress in tJashington has an extensi ve oard oatalogue of all works en Holland
and the Netherlands overseas territories
whieh have been published since 1930.
The ma1n focus of interest in the present
bibliography is anthropology and sooiology, including ethnography, aroheolcgy, linguistios,
and studies of aoculturation. But many books
and ~rticles on geography, oolo~ial administrat~on" eduoation, eoonomios, and history
h~ve been incorporated, beoause of their p~r
t1nence to the anthropology and sooiology of
the area. Moreover, standard references on
geology, botany, zoology, and kindred subjects have been'listed, for their value in
illuminating the human and cultural scene
Mainly, however, tbe bibliography ooncentrate~
upon the peoples and oultures of the Indies.
The general plan of classifioation is by
islands or islap.d groups, and within these' by
peoples and tribes or tribal complexes. This
method of olassifioation seems preferable to
one by political divisions, since, in most instances, the sooial and cultural groupings do
not follow administrative 11nes of demar08tion. The referenoes within eaoh seot1on are
subdivided by language, into those printed in
Dutch end those in languages other than Duteh.
