School Safety Audit

Activity: I was a part of the schools safety audit team, and I also got to be a part of the audit that
was conducted by the local law enforcement agencies and our systems safe schools coordinator.
Description: This was not surprise audit. This audit was conducted as an Intruder Practice
since this is one of the newer issues that can influence the entire schools safety. The school has a
specific protocol for an intruder, and I was involved in the drill.
a. What went well?
The school went into lockdown really well. The team met prior to the Code Red alert
which allows teachers and staff to know that there was an intruder in the building. We
were given our checklist and area we were to check for protocol mistakes. I was to make
sure that the door shades were pulled, doors were locked, notifications of all clear or
emergency was slid outside the door, and I was to knock on doors trying to get in a
classroom. All of my classes passed, and all the classes were very quiet as they were
supposed to be.
b. What did not?
There was one teacher and class who were stuck outside because he did not check his
several reminder emails about the drill, and he then did not follow the outside protocol
because it is realistic the some students/classes could be outside when this could happen.
Also, the debrief after the drill was not thorough when it came to involving me. They
just wanted me to turn in my checklist, but did not dialogue about my specific area.
c. Given the chance to do it again, how would you do it better?
Given the chance to do this again, I would want to be involved in the debriefing aspect as
far as the reflective piece is concerned. As a future administrator, I would have loved to

hear how they would handle the teacher who was outside and any issues that may have
arose in any other areas that day and drill.
