Module 1: 21st Century Learning

Lesson 1: 21st Century Classrooms
Activity 1: Roles in the 21st Century
Estimated Time: 15 minutes
In what ways do you consider yourself a 21st century teacher? Describe how you:

Collaborate with other teachers

Use technology in your classroom
Act as a facilitator of your students learning
Use multiple forms of assessment for content and 21st century skill
development

As a 21st century teacher:

1. We can collaborate well enough to our fellow teachers through having
proper and excellent communication to them. We can also develop our
academic competency level through imparting our thoughts, ideas, talent
and skills in using the modern technology in the teaching-learning
processes in inside and outside the four corners of the classroom. In
addition, we believe that learning is a lifetime gift from God that we need
to treasure more than any material things here on earth. Hence, we
should also help the individuals who need a helping hand.
2. We believe that the technology in the 21st century classroom can
enhance the effectiveness in our future teaching profession. It will also
help us to easily teach the lessons that we will discuss to our dear
students.
3. Learning will be more fruitful and productive, if the teacher will let his
students explore and discover things that they need to know to be
competent individuals. We will just facilitate in their peer and group
discussion to assist and to lead them in the right track of learning their
lessons appropriately.
4. We can evaluate our students by the use of their critical thinking in
decision making and also their creative talent and skills.

Module 1: 21st Century Learning

Activity 3: Evolution of Assessment Practices
Estimated Time: 15 minutes
In the chart, record your current assessment practices and how you would like to
change your assessment practices.

Current Assessment Practices

Changes to Assessment Practices

We use the paper and pencil

test to evaluate our students.

We will conduct an oral recitation

to our students to promote the
active participation towards
them.

We give them an individual

work and project to assess if
they really understand the
lessons.

We will use the group works to

promote the cooperation and
collaborative learning among our
students.

We give them objective type of

written examination to
evaluate the learning
outcomes.

We will use a subjective type of an

examination with open-ended
questions to evaluate our
students, if they really understand
their lessons correctly.

We give them topics related to

our lessons to report in the
class.

We will give them the opportunity

to deliver the topics assign to
them creatively.

Module 1: 21st Century Learning

Lesson 3: 21st Century Assessment Practices
Activity 1: The Role of Formative Assessment
Estimated Time: 10 minutes

How does formative assessment benefit your classroom? What

kinds of changes would you need to make in your assessment
practices to include more formative assessment?
The Formative Assessment is a reflective process that intends to
promote our students attainment. It guides us on our day-to-day
teaching activity. In the context of teaching-learning situation, the
formative value of assessment is perhaps the most important. It allows
me as a teacher to redirect & refocus the course of teaching a subject
matter.
The only thing that I want to improve if not to change is that:
involving the students all throughout the class sessions particularly in
assessing their output and in keeping track of their progress. I want to
implement in my class the individual, partner/peer, small group and
whole class assessments and reflect on every activity conducted. I also
want to sustain the journal writing every after the lesson.

Module 1: 21st Century Learning

Lesson 4: Module Review
Activity 1: Module Summary

Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Based on your understanding of assessment, what assessment goals would you like
to set for yourself during this course, month, or school year? Write your goals. Some
examples include:

Choose 21st century skills to focus on during a particular unit or project

Use formative assessment strategies in my classroom
Add 21st century skills to my rubrics
Use additional assessment instruments to assess
Have students assess themselves and their peers
Distribute rubrics before and during the project
Use journals and/or observations to assess

Our assessment goals:

We would like to give emphasis on the total awareness of our
students in taking good care and preventing the planet to the
ultimate destruction.
We would like to implement the 21 st century assessment skills
effectively to promote a meaningful learning.
The rubrics should be presented to the students so they will be
aware on what they will do to have fruitful learning outcomes.
Moreover, they can also evaluate their selves, if they really have
progress in their academic performances.
Journal Writing must be accomplished every after each lesson for
student fulfillment and satisfaction of the lesson.

Module 2: Assessment Strategies

Lesson 3: Focus on Rubrics
Activity 3: Rubric Development
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
Reflect on your current use of rubrics in your classroom.

How might you use rubrics in new or different ways to improve

your students learning?
We will use the 21st century assessment rubrics to enhance the
academic performance of our students. In addition, we would like to
improve students learning we want them to have self- assessment on

their own work, have their peer assess it too and as well as the whole
group.

Module 2: Assessment Strategies

Lesson 4: The Assessing Projects Library
Activity 2: Assessing Projects Application
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Explore the rubrics shown in the table or in the Assessing Projects library. Select and
save at least one product or performance rubric and at least one 21st Century skill
rubric to your Course Folder or to your Personal Library if using Assessing Projects.
Describe how and when you would use each assessment.

Creativity Rubric

How I will use the rubric:

We will use this 21st century assessment rubric in all the subjects
that will be assigning to us in the near future in our teaching career
to promote the meaningful assessment tools.

Module 2: Assessment Strategies

Lesson 5: Module Review
Activity 1: Module Summary
Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Reflect on your learning in this module.

We learned that for teaching-learning situation to become more

effective and even more productive, assessment strategies must be
widely implemented and used.
With the fruitful experience we had in going through this module, it is
now easier for us to prepare a student-friendly rubric in which they
can easily reflect on it. The value of creativity was also developed in
us. We are now more confident to integrate assessment strategies and
methodologies and most especially the 21st century skills in my
teaching.

Module 3: Assessment Methods

Lesson 1: Assessment and Instruction
Activity 2: Instructional Activities as Assessment
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Describe how you might integrate assessment methods as part of classroom
activities.

Graphic Organizers

In our subject we usually use the VENN DIAGRAM as part of our

preliminary activity to measure the learning skills of our students.
In this strategy students may compare and contrast the specific
topic gave to them.

Journals and Learning Logs

We will use the journals and learning logs in teaching our future
students. Through these meaningful assessment tools we can
measure the learning outcomes of our students and if they really
understand the lessons that we discuss. In addition it can also
promote the self reflective among the students, on how they can
apply and manipulate their decision making in real life situations. I
usually use journals & learning logs in my teaching.

Discussions

The peer and group discussions is highly implemented to the class

to promote the cooperation and collaboration of thoughts and ideas
among the students. Everyone should participate on the

discussions. No one speak twice unless everyone speaks once

(NOSTUESO). It is the basic rule that should be implemented in the
group discussions.

Products and Performances

We will use this kind of strategy to develop the performance skills of

the students and to enhance their academic capabilities.

Module 3: Assessment Methods

Lesson 3: Classroom Conferences
Activity 3: Example Conferences
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Describe how you might include each assessment method in your classroom.

Observation

When we were discussing the lesson, we will become more

observant in our dear students to monitor if they really understand
the lesson we have discussed to them. And to develop their active
participations during the class discussion within the classroom.

Peer Assessment

As pre-service teachers we will use the peer assessment tools in

evaluating our students through this meaningful activities the
students can able to assess their peers on what our their strength
and weaknesses in that particular activities. In addition to this they
can also make a remedy on how they can cope with in the
difficulties in their studies through the help of their peers along
their sides.

Self-Assessment

We will use the self assessment tools the learner can evaluate his or
her own strength and weaknesses.

Student-Teacher Conferences

After we finish the discussion, we will implement the conference to

assess and to know the level of thinking skills of the students. Each
of the students should have the reflection. In accordance to the
topic they had.

When and How I Will Use

The multimedia presentation rubric will be

used during the presentation of their
output after the individual or group
research is done. We will use it to assess
their performance during the showcasing.
Self-assessment, peer-assessment and as
well as group assessment can be better
implemented.
A self-made checklist can be better used. A
checklist can be very helpful prior, during
and towards the completion of the project.
The collaboration checklist can be used
during collaborative work by the students.
By using this, they can reflect on the
results of their project or research. They
accomplish it collaboratively.

Lesson 4: Use of Assessment Data

Activity 2: Reflection and Goal Setting
Estimated Time: 15 minutes
Review your ideas for tracking and organizing student assessment data from Module
5, Lesson 3, Activity 1. How will you and your students use the information from the
assessment data?
1. Consider how students can use the assessment information to:

Reflect on their learning

Modify their goals or actions
Revise their work
Build on their 21st century skills, and so on

Describe what you will have your students do with the assessment data they collect
and organize.

The assessment data that students collect may be useful for them to
achieve better learning. They can analyze the assessment data all
throughout the completion of the unit to keep track and draw
conclusions on their progress. During the teacher-student conferences,
they may be able to share their progress and write their goals for the
next units to be accomplished.
2. Determine how you will use the assessment data to:

Modify instruction
Determine proficiency
Plan future units, and so on

Plan how you will use student assessment data that you organize and track.

The brainstorming, guided or reflective discussion and other

preliminary activities before the unit begins will help me determine the
needs of the students. These could also be the basis in determining
what area will be given more emphasis or focus during instruction. As
a teacher who facilitates students learning, I plan to use first or have
to model to them the different 21st century skills strategies especially
ICT literacy, creativity, collaboration and self-direction based on my
experiences from them during the teacher-student conferences.

Module 5: Assessment in Action

Lesson 5: Grading in a 21st Century Classroom
Activity 2: Grading Systems (Optional)
Estimated Time: 10 minutes

What strategies will you use to assign grades to student work and processes?

The strategy that I will use in getting the final grades of my students
are based on the class standing they already earned and the written
examination they have. The rubrics prepared will also be used. For
their final grade I will get percentage from their own assessment, peer
assessment and my assessment based on the rubric.

Module 5: Assessment in Action

Lesson 6: Module Review
Activity 1: Module Summary
Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Reflect on the learning from this module.

Definitely Yes! It really helps us to use our mind critically in answering
the five modules. Honestly, we encountered difficulties in answering it.
Hence, we believe that teaching is not just a simple profession but
instead, it is a novel profession that we will need a passion in teaching
and imparting our knowledge and skills to make a meaningful teaching
and learning experience. We appreciate the idea of self-assessment
aside from the other systems of assessment. We realized that there
are many ways to assess our students performances. We also learned
that as teachers, we have to monitor our students progress from the
very start of the class session or the entire implementation of the unit.

Course Wrap-Up
Summary
Activity 1: Course Reflection
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Revisit the goals you set for assessment in your classroom from Module 1, Lesson 4,
Activity 1. Write about your progress toward those goals.

We have to get our students more involved in assessment especially

self-assessment and peer assessment. We are starting to use
technology to record assessment data. We are very much motivated to
integrate these assessment methods as we will go to the classroom
after learning everything from this module.
What new goals do you have for assessment in your 21st Century classroom? What
goals do you have for your students?

We need to focus on student involvement in the assessment process.

We also want to develop practices for self and peer assessment for
every lesson or unit. We want to develop the culture of creative
classroom activities especially in assessing students projects and
performances. Moreover, we are very much motivated to integrate
these assessment methods as we will go to the classroom after
learning everything from this module.
