Factoring Trinomials

Teachers Name: Pol Nio Endona Laset

Subject: Intermediate Algebra (Ad Math 8A)
Time Allotment: 90 minutes
Grade Level: Junior High School Grade 8

I.

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. recall how to factor using GCF and by grouping;
2. define the meaning of trinomials by looking at the different types of polynomials;
3. perform how to factor trinomials with a coefficient of 1 for the second degree term as demonstrated ;

II.

Subject Matter
A. Topic: Finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
B. References: Hornsby, J.E., Lial, M.L., and McGinnis, T. (2012). Beginning Algebra. 11th Ed. Harper

III.

Lesson Proper
A. Priming / Anticipatory Set

1. Recall The teacher will recall how to factor using GCF and by grouping;

Factoring is the opposite of multiplying.

Example:

1) 56 can be factored into +8,-8,+1,-1,+2,-2+,28,-28+4,-4,+14,-14,7,-7,+56,-56.

2) x3 + 2x2 + 8x + 16
= (x3 + 2x2) + (8x + 16)
= x2(x + 2) + 8(x + 2)
= (x + 2) (x2 + 8)

B. Direct Instruction / Activity

1. Preliminary Activity the teacher will define the meaning of trinomials by looking at the

different types of polynomials.

A polynomial is a mathematical expression composed of terms that can be either constants or

variables that are separated by numerical operators. A general example of a polynomial in one
variable is:

Take note that polynomials should not have a negative exponent and a variable in the
denominator or in a radical.

6x 2 : not a polynomial since there is a negative exponent.

1
2
x

: not a polynomial since there is a variable on the denominator.

: not a polynomial since there is a variable on the radical.

4x2 : a polynomial!

Polynomials can be classified according to the number of terms.

Monomial :

5, 6x, x and etc.

Binomial :

3x+2, 7x3 + 7y

Trinomial :

2x5 5x3 2

Polynomial :

x4 + 6x2+ x+7

2. Main Activity The teacher will introduce the concept of factoring by grouping trinomials using
FOIL method.

Coeff 1 Second degree term

All + term

Middle neg term

Neg last term

2 neg term

IV.

Assessment the teacher will have a quiz next meeting.

V.

Closure - the teacher will summarize the topic by filling up a concept map.

Factoring

Can be done by

(1)
Finding the Greatest Common Factor first

(2)
Then group the terms.

(3)

If you feel that you are not doing well, try to

rearranging the terms.
