at First Baptist Church

Rev. Mang Sonna, Executive Director of the
Bethel Neighborhood Center in Kansas City, will
be our special guest on July 19th. Mang will
preach and share special music in our 9:30 worship service, and then he will share more about Bethel and their upcoming capital campaign during a lunch at 12:00pm.
Rev. Sonna, Bethels Executive Director since May 2009, uses his native language, other languages he knows, and all his skills and creativity in the Bethel
ministry. He has said, I am blessed to be able to use my whole being to serve
God and Gods people. God is using me to be the voice for the voiceless to offer hope and help to those who need them the most. He believes that God
made each human being equal, with a special purpose, and loves everyone the
same. He said, An inner city ministry like Bethel has many opportunities to
show Gods love in words and in deeds. I am investing my life in the Bethel ministry because it emits the love of Christ and offers hope to the hopeless and empowers those who are powerless to become what God wants them to be.

Summer Worship and Sunday School Series July 12-August 9
We have spent time, effort, and money on an important part of our life as Gods church: the physical plant. This summers Worship and Sunday School time will move us forward as we build the body of Jesus, our community of faith. During our Summer Worship and Sunday School Series, July 12-August 9, we will together explore what it means to build our
community from the inside-out.
WORSHIP
During our worship series, we will explore the Biblical theme of building the body through various Scriptures. We will
together ask how God might be using our individual gifts for use in communal and Gospel ways.
July 12: Building the Body (1 Corinthians 12); Pastor Cheryl preaching
July 19: Caring for the Body; Rev. Mang Sonna, Executive Director of the Bethel Neighborhood Center, preaching
July 26: Feeding the Body (John 6.1-21); Pastor Matt preaching
August 2: Equipping the Body (Ephesians 4.1-16); Pastor Matt preaching
August 9: The Spirits Strength for the Body (1 Kings 19.4-8); Pastor Matt preaching
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL
The 3 Colors of Ministry: A Trinitarian Approach to Identifying and Developing Your Spiritual Gifts is the
series that Adult and Youth Sunday School classes are invited to experience together for five
weeks. This series will allow us to not only identify personal spiritual gifts, but it will guide us
as we discover ways to use our gifts together in serving God. We will look at areas of
commitment, power, and wisdom; of Creation, Calvary, and Pentecost; of God as Creator, Spirit, Jesus; and more. Being gifted by God for ministry is not just a catch phrase; it is
the infrastructure, so to speak, of our life as a faith community that follows Jesus Christ.
Our time together will include tools to assist us in discovering how God has gifted us; it will
include Bible study; and it will be a time of strengthening our congregation, not just individuals. We will meet at 10:45 a.m. in the Roger Williams Room. Our leaders for these weeks will
be Nancy and Tim Bonner, and Revs. Matt Sturtevant and Cheryl Harader. Plan now to be
here as often as you can to grow in God with your church family.

American Baptist Home Mission Societies Calls New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) has voted unanimously
to call the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, interim senior pastor of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Roswell,
Ga., to the position of executive director. He will lead the historic mission agency following the retirement of Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins III in October. ..."As executive minister of DCBC, Jeff showed
great leadership skills in reaching across the full racial/ethnic and theological spectrum," says the Rev.
Dr. A. Roy Medley, ABC/USA general secretary. "He has a passion for the life of the church as it faces
the challenges of ministry in North America and the capacity to lead ABHMS in its response."

Affordable Housing Conference

Friday, July 17, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

On July 17, Tenants to Homeowners will host an Affordable Housing Conference intended to educate interested
citizens, community leaders, donors, housing advocates
and developers about what a Housing Trust Fund is, and
how it could promote long term, community housing affordability.
The conference is free and open to the public. No registration is needed.

Donate School Supplies July 18 through 31st

In an effort to help low-income parents in our community,
a group of local agencies and businesses are working together to make sure children who qualify for free or reduced cost lunches have the tools they need for academic
success. If you would like to donate school supplies (lists
can be found at Walmart, Office Depot, or the USD 497
website), please deliver them to the Salvation Army (946
New Hampshire St.) or the United Way (2518 Ridge Ct,
#200) between July 1831. Monetary donations and gift
cards are also welcomed.

to One Great Hour of Sharing. By the grace of
God, all of us have the power to give, and the
gifts we give make the world more the way God
intended it to bea place where everyone has
what they need. OGHS reaches those near and
far, changing lives of those in desperate need of
our compassion and generosity. Its not the size
of the gift that matters; its that we give of what
we have.

Staff Whereabouts
Pastor Matt will be out of the state July 5 18. He and his family will be in Kentucky
visiting family and friends through the first week. Then, he has been invited to serve
as a guest preacher in Ocean Park, Maine, on July 12, and he and Kimberly will
continue their vacation in Maine through the rest of that week.
