Splicing and wavelength

When you slices fibers together, the result loss comes from lateral
misalignment, fiber bending, or the intrinsic mismatch between the fibers.
Two of these causes (lateral misalignment and bending) depend on
wavelength. The third cause (intrinsic mismatch) is essentially independent
of the wavelength.Furthermore, the loss of a fusion splices depends on the
wavelength. Longer wavelength tend to have less loss at given splice, in the
absence of bending, than short wavelength because of the mode-field
diameter of the fiber. If the loss is slight greater at the shorter wavelength
than the longer wavelength, there is essentially no bending loss. If the loss is
greater at the longer wavelength than at the short wavelength, bending loss
is significant.
