Earthquake Explorers

Working Technologically
Outcome
ST3-5WT: plans and implements a design process, selecting a range of tools, equipment,
materials and techniques to produce solutions that address the design criteria and
identified constraints.
Throughout the unit Earthquake Explorers that students will have numerous
opportunities to use different technologies and a wide range of multimedia.

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

1. In small groups students are to discuss then research ways architects and
constructions teams build structures that are resistant to movements in the Earth.
2. Using this knowledge they are to design a structure of at least 40cm in height. They
need to consider: the materials required, the shape of the structure, the method
used to join pieces together and most importantly how it will withstand an
earthquake.
3. Students create their buildings in their groups. Will it stand? Does it require further
strengthening? How will you stop it from falling over?
4. As a class test each building and time how long they remained standing in a
simulated earthquake.
The simulated earthquake requires a large clear plastic container with plastic bags
filled with water as a base. Place the structure in the middle and laterally shake the
container timing how long it remains standing.
This video explains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6BnKOjdOSY Theres 6
parts to the video, but youll get the idea after their 1st one.
5. After theyve tested their structures, the groups should be allowed an opportunity to
refine their designs.
