What Is
Nanotechnology

What is Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology - art and science of
manipulating matter at the nanoscale
One nanometre (nm) is one billionth
of a metre, or one millionth of a millimetre.
A human hair is 80,000nm thick.
A red blood cell is 5,000nm in diameter.
A DNA molecule is 2.5nm wide.
10 hydrogen atoms arranged side by
side measure 1nm.

Nano Materials
TiO2 - white pigment and is an

excellent
reflective
coating.
hydrophilic and gives self cleaning
properties from concrete to glass.
anti-fogging coatings or self-cleaning
windows.

are a form of
carbon, cylindrical in shape, and their name
comes from their nanometre diameter.
They can be several millimetres in length and
can have one layer or wall (single walled
nanotube) or more than one wall (multi walled
nanotube).
It is being used to strengthen and monitor
concrete.
Carbon Nano Tubes(CNT):

NANO-SILICA
In 2004, Lab tests and production tests

proved that the nano silica produced better

results than micro silica, and a liter bottle
of the product was equivalent to a barrel
full of micro silica, extra cement and super
plasticizing additives.

Todays Nano-Products
Paints, waxes and coatings to protect

against corrosion, scratches and radiation

Protective and coatings for eyeglasses and
cars
Metal-cutting tools
Sunscreens and cosmetics
Longer-lasting tennis balls and longerdistance golf balls
Light-weight, stronger tennis racquets,
skis, and bicycle frames

Todays Nano-Products
Clothing and mattresses Stain resistant and

wrinkle resistant fabric

Dental-bonding agent
Burn and wound dressings
Socks contain nanoparticles of silver.
These particles help kill the bacteria that
makes our feet smell.
Batteries and fuel cells

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN
GLASS
Tio2 is used in nano particle
form to coat glassing since it has
sterilizing and anti- fouling
properties .

Fire protective glass is another

application of nanotechnology
in which clear in tumescent layer

fumed silica nano particles
which in turns into a regid a

STEEL

FATIGUE
CABLES
JOINTS
WELLS

FATIGUE
It is a significant issue that can lead to the structural

failure of steel subject to cyclic loading .

stress risers are responsible for initiating cracks from

which fatigue failure results and the addition of

copper nano particles reduces the surface unevenness
of steel which then limits to the number of stress risers
hence fatigue cracking

CABLES, JOINTS &

WELDS

CABLE : The refinement of the phase of steel to a nano size

has produced stronger cables high strength steel cables being
used in car tyres are used in bridge construction and pre
casting concrete.
JOINTS : High rise structure require high strength joints
this in turn leads to need for high strength bolts which are
generally gone through quenching and tempering martensite.
WELDS : Heat effected zones adjucent to wells can be
brittle and fail without warning when subjected to sudden
dynamic load when addition of nano particles of magnesium
and increase weld toughness.

NANO IN COATING
Nano technology is being
applied to paints and
insulating properties, produced
by the addition of nano-size
cells ,pores and particles .
This type of paint is used at
present for corrosion
protection under insulation
since it is hydrophobic and
