Letter to Parents
Dear Wolverine Broadcasting Parent,
Parents, Id like to thank you for allowing your child the opportunity to
learn more about the wonderful world of Broadcasting. I am a graduate of
Overton High Schools Class of 1997. After 15 years, I returned with zeal and
hope to create a spark of interest in your student, just as one was created,
fanned and sparked in me. Like the late, Whitney Houston, I believe the
children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show
them all the beauty they possess inside.

Give them a sense of pride, to

make it easier. To this end, I aim to shape the class in a way that all learners
will develop a sense of I can when it comes to media technology and have
a desire to continue to sharpen their skills and interests by taking
Broadcasting II and Broadcasting III at the Telecommunications Center as a
part of Vo-Tech (TCC, home of 88.5FM and Cable 19-The Voice of Shelby
County Schools) or at Overton with me. In these classes students will learn
technical skills like: Audio/Video Editing, Sound Recording, Videography, Mac
Computer Operations, A/V Production, Desktop and Internet Publishing,
Internet Research and a variety of employability skills that will help them
become champions at work.
Everyone is expected to come to class with a purposed mind-set, daily
and on time.

Absences and tardiness will affect your grade. If you leave

early, you will not receive full points for being in class for that day. If
possible, please inform me if you will be late or absent or if you will leave
early.

Contacting me by email is the most efficient way to reach me:

cjmemphis901@gmail.com.

Students should be prepared when coming to

class to discuss and participate in class activities willingly and happily. (That
means that you should read whats assigned and complete auxiliary
assignments so you will have something to contribute to the robust
exchange of ideas, building of community, teamwork, knowledge
base and collective success of the class-We are a team and we all

Anderson 3
will win!) Literacy and Math will be integrated throughout the year to help
students practice these skills outside of the content area.

They may be

asked to read a manual and summarize instructions for a function of

equipment to others or calculate the number of commercials possible given
specific guidelines and industry standards.
The teacher expects that students have basic home training, which
follows or recognizes the Golden Rule: I will treat others, their property and
ideas, as I would want others to treat my property, ideas and me. In fact,
this is the only classroom rule.

I will establish protocols that are to be

followed and students will develop their own classroom contracting behavior
norms and consequences for violating the learning communitys agreed upon
rules.

Beyond that, the school has enough policies to govern student

behavior. In the classroom, following school rules and the Golden Rule,
sets us up with solid foundation to interact appropriately. Please make sure
your student is familiar with the Golden Rule.
Although the class style and opportunities for engagement are
somewhat relaxed, free flowing and fun, we have a limited amount of time in
each class, about 45-50 minutes to cover a variety of concepts and
principles, introduce and review material and produce media projects. It is
extremely important that we respect time by learning quickly, when to laugh
and when to be silent and not cause any further disruptions or delays in
progressing learning and or completing the tasks of the day.

When the

teacher gives instructions, direction or redirection, it is expected that the

students will respond with a sense of urgency and purpose-any delay can
throw off our schedule and complicate the pending achievements of the day.
To this end, you can look forward to hearing from me through the following
channels:

District Mandated Progress Reports and Report Cards, 3-Week

Broadcasting Progress Reports (You will be asked to sign and return these
and set up conferences based on your students progress towards mastering
instructional goals.), Emails, Phone Calls and Parent-Student Lessons which

Anderson 4
will be the Thursday and Friday of each week following District Progress
Reports

(You will have the opportunity to come in and learn and

demonstrate your learning and enhance our learning community with your
experiences.).
Students will be evaluated in terms of successfully demonstrating
proficiency of key concepts and specific performance indicators associated
with course objectives, including regular, routine, and minor assignments,
like bell work, homework and class work; tests, quizzes, portfolios, online
assessments, and major projects. Everyone is expected to review and reflect
at home, participate during class time, during discussions and while working
on group projects.

Grades will be determined using the Overton

Standards-Based Grading System (OS-BGS). This new way of grading

holds our best hope in coordinating our efforts toward improving student
achievement. Progress report and report card grades should be an average
of the proficiency levels for each skill taught during that grading period only.

As a requirement for our class to receive Carl Perkins Funding to help
purchase supplies and offer the best possible broadcast learning experience,
we are required to have a SkillsUSA Chapter.

SkillsUSA is a Career and

Technical Student Organization that provides industry/professional training

and opportunities for students to demonstrate their learned skills in
competition on local, state, regional and national levels. All Broadcasting I
students are expected to join because; all students enjoy the benefits of the
technological enhancements Carl Perkins Funds provide. Thus, a technology
fee of $20 is added to the supply list to cover SkillsUSA membership and
create a cushion for special projects of interest. If you know Media Industry
Professionals who are interested in Public Education and your childs future,

Anderson 5
please recommend them to me as possible Advisory Board Members. These
real-world-professional connections will prove invaluable. I look forward to
collaborating with you to make this an awesome year!
