Biodentine - The next big

thing in dentistry
AUTHOR: SEPTODONT

In September 2010, Septodont announced the addition of a breakthrough new product to its portfolio:
Biodentine. Like all Septodont products, research and scientific development is paramount. Biodentine
underwent extensive research on 300 patients over five years, with 22 independent papers products
by September 2010.

Biodentine is a novel new material that Septodont claim is set to revolutionise the world of dentistry.
Biodentine is the first all-in-one bioactive and biocompatible dentine substitute, based on unique
Active Biosilicate Technology, and designed to treat damaged dentine both for restorative and
endodontic indications.
Highly biocompatible, thanks to its tricalcium silicate core, Biodentine eliminates the risk of adverse
tissue response. It also helps preserve pulp vitality by promoting reactionary dentine genesis and has,
claim Septodont, outstanding sealing properties to reduce the risk of clinical failures through bacterial
percolation, thus ensuring the absence of postoperative sensitivity.

15 single-dose containers
Biodentine needs no surface conditioning or bonding and sets quickly, making it simple and easy to
use for the busy clinician.

What the experts think

Endodontist Dr Julian Webber describes it as the perfect root canal repair material. He said:
Sophisticated biosilicate technology and 100% biocompatibility makes Biodentine the perfect root
canal repair material. With its improved handling ability and quick setting time, it offers considerable
advantages over other similar materials. I cannot recommend it more highly.
Professor Callum Youngson added: Biodentine finally provides us with a material that closely
resembles lost dentine and has the potential to promote, rather than just allow, healing of the pulpitic

tooth. Biodentine is also compatible with the final composite restoration, making it an important
addition to the clinicians armamentarium. Basingstoke GDP Stephen Barlin has been using Biodentine
for the last three months.

Q&A
Q In what situations have you used Biodentine?
A I have used Biotentine to restore deep class v cavities, gross root caries, restore endodontic access
cavities, and restorations where the pulp is likely to have been exposed.
Q How is Biodentine different or better than precious products and why?
A Biodentines most useful property is the biocompatibility. It works well when placed against the pulp
without causing adverse reactions. It means that to restore an exposure only need to use one
material; rather than two (GIC and MTA). I am unconvinced yet about the strength of the material or
how good it is at bonding to dentine.
Q What do you particularly like about it?
A It is easy to use and gives one further options when faced with difficult restoration problems.
Q Which of its clinical attributes do you think is the most important?
A Clearly the biocompatibility is extremely valuable to me. It is an ideal material to use when using
the PAD (photo activated disinfection) technique I use routinely to restore grossly carious teeth.
Q How easy is it to learn to use?
A The material is easy to use and the placement is easy enough, but one needs to be careful not to
overmanipulate the material.
Q Do you think Biodentine is the Next Big Thing?
A Biodentine is a useful adjunct to contemporary restorative materials as few materials are truly
biocompatible. In modern dentistry this material fits in well with the aim of using a biological approach
to the restoration of damaged teeth.
