Record base
Definition
A rigid, relatively thin layer of wax, shellac, or thermoplastic (heat-, chemically-, or light-
activated) polymer adapted over edentulous surfaces of a definitive cast to form a base
which, together with an attached occlusion rim made of wax or similar material, serves
as the record base
( GPT 9 )
A record base or base plate is a temporary form representing the base of a denture. It is
used in recording maxillomandibular relations and in the arrangement of the teeth
Requirements :
1. The record bases should be rigid.
2. The record bases should be dimensionally stable.
3. The borders of the record bases should be the same as the finished
denture.
4.The record bases should be closely adapted to the tissue surfaces of
the cast.
5. The record bases constructed should permit its use as a base for
setting the teeth
6. It should be easy to construct and the material should be inexpensive
Types of record bases:
Occlusion rim
Definition :
Occlusion rims are occluding surfaces constructed on
record bases or permanent denture bases to be used in
recording jaw relations and for arranging teeth.
USES of occlusal rim :
Occlusal rims are used to establish the level of occlusal plane
To establish maxillomandibular record like vertical and horizontal jaw
relations.
The midline, canine line, high lip line and low lip line and intercanine
distance are recorded on the wax occlusal rims.
Occlusion rims help to determine the length and width of the artificial
teeth.
Midline of the arch for the proper placement of central incisors.
To obtain proper lip support
Dimensions of occlusion rim
It should follow the arch of the residual alveolar ridge and should be
placed on the ridge where the natural teeth were originally present.
Materials and methods :
Equipment and Materials
a. Maxillary and mandibular record bases on master
casts
b. Baseplate was
c. Ruler
d. Carver and wax spoon
e. Wax Knife
f. Hot plate
g. Bunsen burner and matches
Wax ready-made occlusion rim
1. It is supplied as a horse shoe shaped rim, adapt it in the proper
position on the record base.
2. Softened it slightly, sealed it with the record base by the aid of a wax
knife.
3. Smooth all the surfaces
Hand—made occlusion rim
Uniformly soften a sheet of hard pink baseplate wax. Flame the wax in a Bunsen burner flame slowly
by passing the wax quickly through the flame many times. When the wax is thoroughly softened, fold
the wax in half. Continue to flame the wax to soften it. Repeat the folding and warming until the
entire sheet of wax is used.
The other way, the wax is simply rolled into a tight cylinder, then shaped to arch form.
Form the wax into a horseshoe shape and adapt the wax to the record base over the ridge crest area.
Begin at the right tuberosity area and continue to the anterior and opposite tuberosity area. Seal it to
the record base with molten wax using a hot spatula.
Use a hot plate to develop a flat occlusal plane.
The width and height of the occlusion rim then adjusted according to the measurements mentioned
before.
Clinical aspects:
Maxillary Occlusion Rim Adjustment
1- Maxillary rim slightly should be facial to compensate for ridge resorption.
2- Anterior height 1-2 mm below the lip at rest/ when the patient slightly
smiles.
3- The labial surface of the wax anterior to incisive papilla ---- 8 - 10 mm
3- Lips should be unstrained
Maxillary Occlusion Rim planes
Adjustment
1- Frontal (Mediolaterally) the
occlusal plane parallels the pupils
(Fox plane can be used
2- Anterioposteriorly,- The Maxillary
denture occlusal plane should be
parallel to the camper’s line
Mandibular Occlusion Rim Adjustment
1. Posteriorly, the occlusion rim intersects 1/2
— 2/3 up the retromolar pad.
2. Anterior height even with the corners of
the mouth when the lip is relaxed
3. 1-2 mm horizontal overjet
4. Unstrained lips
