Impression Compound 1

Impression compound is a rigid, reversible impression material that is classified as non-elastic. It softens when heated and hardens when cooled. There are two types - Type I, which has a lower fusion temperature just above mouth temperature, and Type II, which has a higher fusion temperature of around 70°C. Impression compound has advantages like being easy to adjust but disadvantages like dimensional instability and inability to record undercuts due to being non-elastic.

Impression Materials
Impression materials are those materials
which we used to obtain an impression of
teeth and/or the surrounding oral tissues.
Classification of Impression
Materials
Impression materials are classified
into 2 classes
1. Elastic
2. Non- elastic or Rigid
Non elastic Impression materials

1. Impression compound
2. Plaster as an impression materials
3. Zinc oxide eugenol impression pastes
4. Tissue conditioning materials (tissue
conditioner)
5. Impression wax
Impressions compound
Impression compound is a thermoplastic
material which softens when heated and
hardens when cooled
It is rigid and reversible impression
material
Types of Impression compound

1. Type I (Lower fusing)

2. Type II (Higher fusing)
Type I (Lower fusing)
 It is low fusing with a fusion temperature of approximately.
above 45°C
 They are available in Sheets ,sticks,Cylinders and Cones
 Should flow readily at just above mouth temperature
 Should be Capable of recording sharp grooves 0.2-4 mm
wide into the Surface of metal test block
It is present in two forms
1) Stick form
2) Cake form or sheet form
Stick form: used for border molding of
special [Link] by using heat of flame
& the tracing sticks should not be allowed to
boil by direct contact with the flame
(plasticizers will volatilized).
Cake form: For taking impression of edentulous
patient
 Cake in red form
 Thickness 5mm
 Softens at 55-60C in hot water
Type II ( Higher fusing)
• High fusing with a fusion temperature of
approximately above 70°C.
• Supplied in sheet form
• It is stiffer and less flowable.
• Used to make a tray into which another
impression material is placed. This is done
for complete dentures of edentulous arches.
Properties
 It posses high co-efficient of thermal expansion
 It is more viscous as compared to all other impression
material
 It is having poor thermal conductivity
 Undercuts can’t be recorded
 Shirnkage can be companset by adding some more
material
Advantages of impression compound

 A major advantage of impression compound materials

is that they are very easy to adjust.
 Alterations to the impression can be made by
removing replacing or adding material until a
satisfactory result is obtained.
 Impression compound is more rigid when set and can
be softened again if you need to make more
adjustments
Disadvantages
 The handling of dental impression compound is a
very sensitive technique.
 Due to a high coefficient of thermal expansion, the
dimensions of the impression are not likely to be the
same as the dimensions in the mouth (dimensionally
unstable).
 These materials are non-elastic and may distort on
removal from the mouth (undercut).
