Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other websitecreation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
LESSON IDEA: WEBSITE-CREATION TOOLS
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: ELA/8th Grade/ELAGSE8RI7: Evaluate the
advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video,
multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea.
Brief Description of Learning Experience:
The ELAGAE8R17 Standard will be addressed. Students will use different mediums to determine which
medium/tools would work best to present their story to their classmates. The teacher will give students a
selection of educational tools for students to use such as software or websites students will use to create
their story to present to their peers. The teacher will introduce this activity at the beginning of class. It will
take approximately two weeks to complete. The students are presenting to their classmates.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
Student Engagement: Which indicators of Engaged Learning are strong and why? (See Engaged
Learning and Authenticity handouts distributed earlier this semester.)
Student-directed, multi-disciplinary, producer, explorer, and collaborative are strong indicators of Engaged
Learning. These specific areas are chosen because students will be tasked at discovering and creating much
of their project by utilizing theses indicators.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and Why? (See Engaged
Learning handout distributed earlier this semester.) Loti level 5 would be used in this lesson because
students are able to put their work on the classroom blog after presenting to their peers.
Importance of technology:
Creating a website allows students to create their own unique piece of work using multiple technologies.
Using a website-creation tool such as Edublogs allows teachers to monitor their students work. The project
could be completed without using a website-creation tool, however students would not develop the
technical skills to create one in the future. A computer, tablet, or any other internet-connected device will be
used to collect data and information needed to complete the learning experience.
Inspiration (optional):
http://mscassidysclass.edublogs.org/
I borrowed the idea of giving each student his or her own page.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Internet safety is top priority when it regards to students using the internet to complete an assignment.
Using the first name and last initial or first initial and last name would protect the privacy of the student. I
would gather prior parent permission if student work is to be published as well as a photo release if a
students photo were to be used. I would describe the activity to parents/administrators and provide
examples to make them more comfortable about the activity.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
My personal learning goal for this activity is to find ways to engage students using technologies that they
are not familiar with. I have not tried this activity with other website-creation tools and hope to do so in
future activities. I hope the students will learn a new skill and be able to apply it to other future projects.
Other comments about your proposed activity:
The activity requires active teacher and student involvement.
