The exercise we are going to ask you to complete is fairly simple
and fun. As you have seen from the example above and from the argument made in the previous section, the best way to familiarize oneself with the anthropocene is to determine the size, the extent the scale of the human "footprint" on Earth. The scale has changed immensely in the last two centuries but it is difficult for us to get a real grip on the many measurements that have been proposed to account for the change. How can we be aware that what is called the Great Acceleration (see Steffen's paper) is such a recent phenomenon? This fantastic increase has happened in my own lifetime. To render "footprint" phenomena visible we need to find good sources of data and also visualize them in the most striking and least distorted way. So what we are asking you to do is to find an example of "footprint" data and to share it with other students. We will soon accumulate enough examples to become sensitive to the accelerated change of scale and thereby provide a more concrete sense of the notion of "human footprint".
