TALK SHOW

Topic: Eradicating Modern Day Slavery

Anchor: Good morning everyone. Welcome to the Eighth Grader Talk Show live
from Callang National High School Broadcasting Center. Today, we have
four special guests in the different walks of life who will be sharing their
significant insights, feelings and opinions regarding the unstoppable
proliferation of slavery incidents around the globe. You know people, the
whole world is now in a state of great shock because of the unceasing
number of slavery incidents which put significant number of innocent
individuals in a situation which I believe they have not chosen to be into. I
am glad that our guests for today have responded to our invitation.
To have a better and clearer understanding of the issue, we will be
talking with ______________, the Department of Social Worker and
Development Officer of the municipality of San Manuel, as well as
_________________, the Municipal Violence against Women and Children
Desk Officer of this municipality. Likewise that we have here
_______________, to hear the stand of parents, and lastly, we have also on
our show ____________, SK chairman and a student of CNHS for us to know
the side and voice of our youth. Good morning guests
Guests: Good morning (nodding)
Anchor: Okay, let us start by asking our guests about what they know about
slavery. May we start with our DSWD officer, Mr./Ms. _______, sir/maam
DSWDO: As far as my knowledge serves me, slavery is something that deprives
people of their rights. It is a sort of human rights violation which renders
people unable to exercise their rights freely.
Anchor: Thats very true. Many people across the globe are victims of slavery.
And to date, millions of people are experiencing the situation. How about
your perspective, Mr/Ms. ________ (VAWC Desk officers name)?
VAWCDO: Mr./Ms. _________ (DSWDO name) characterization of slavery is very
true. You know as a VAWC representative to this forum, we are dealing with
violence particularly those which are experienced by women and children
and it is very disheartening to know that slavery has remained an issue up
to this time. You know, slavery puts an individual entirely under the
domination of some influential and rich persons. It is a situation wherein,
people are somewhat treated not as people but like properties or
possessions and this is not the mandate of our constitution to live freely.
Anchor: That is really true. Article 3 of our constitution states that Everyone has
the right to life, liberty and security of person. And it is clear that slaves
are not experiencing and enjoying such freedom. Mr./Mrs. ______ (parent),
do you have any personal experience, or do you know of other peoples
experiences on slavery?
Parent: As a matter of fact, I havent any experience on slavery. But, I know that
slavery is more pronounced in other countries. Nevertheless, minor
incident which I know is a form of slavery happens in our country. If I am
right, is it not that forced labor among children a form of slavery. A wife
who is forced to have sex and do the things that her husband tells him to
do despite her unwilling to oblige is a form of slavery.
Anchor: Yes, youre right. Marriage is not a passport for a husband to treat his
wife like a plaything or a toy. Same is true that parents, being the way

through which children are brought forth into this world, is not a reason for
them to oblige their children to do whatever they want even if it violates
their rights as individuals Mr/Ms. _______ (student), if in case, your
parents violate your rights by forcing you to drop out of school and work
full time in the farm and if you do not heed for their command you will not
be given food or beaten repeatedly?
Student: I am very thankful that my parents have raised me not in that situation.
But should I be in such situation, maybe, I may work part time but I will
find a way to go to school because I know how important education is. I
believe that it is my passport in achieving a brighter future ahead of me. I
dont want to become a slave of poverty.
Anchor: Thats nice to hear. I support you on that. By the way, in these modern
days, how can you become instruments in eradicating slavery? May we
start with our DSWD officer.
DSWDO: Well, eradicating slavery needs commitment. While browsing the net, I
came across a blog which posted the ways on ending slavery. I want to
borrow some of the articles content. The article shared 4 ways to
eradicate slavery, that is prevent, pursue, provoke and pray.
Anchor: That is 4Ps, isnt it?
DSWDO: Yeah, youre right. It says there that to prevent, we have to combat
poverty by meeting a childs basic needs for education, proper nutrition,
and health care. This is called holistic child development. To pursue, we
have to seek justice that is working to free those slaves and prosecute
their captors. To provoke, we have to stir or provoke other to be fair, and to
pray. We can still fight slavery by praying and asking guidance from our
Divine Providence.
Anchor: Those are indeed significant solutions to note. I guess slavery will be
suppressed if those things will be taken into consideration Do you have
something to add, Mr/Ms. ________ (VAWC officer)?
VAWCDO: For me, prayer for the end of slavery counts as Mr/Ms. (DSWDO) have
said. Prayer Points is a good resource. Another is to do research to find out
what non-profits are in your area that helps victims of human trafficking.
Ask what they need and how you can help. Know what the signs are for a
trafficked victim, and Get involved in advocacy of solving the problems of
slavery.
Anchor: Those were also potential solutions to the problem May we likewise
hear the insight of our parent.
Parent: On my own opinion, I can help solve the problem on slavery by reporting
to the authorities any form of trafficking and slavery that I see in order that
innocent individuals will be saved and the traffickers will be apprehended
and penalized.
Anchor: That is likewise a good solution. How about our student?
Student: First of all, I want everyone to know that I am responsible user of the
social media and it helped me a lot in different ways. For me, I can use my
social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to generate
public awareness and encourage my friends and followers to take action
against slavery. I believe that this is the best way I can do especially that
almost everyone has an access to this form of media.
Anchor: Why not? We are living in modern and computer age wherein in just a
click of our fingers and in just a few seconds, we can share to others what

we want to share. But just a bit of reminder, we must be responsible in

using this form of media in order to do away with any negative
consequences.
There you go avid viewers. Our airing time has elapsed. I hope that
through the insights our guests have shared to you, you have better
understood the importance of stopping slavery. It is our hope that through
the solutions given out by our guests, you were enlightened and
encouraged to become active advocates of anti-slavery campaign.
To our guests, thank you very much and to our viewers, thank you
for patronizing the show. Till next time and good day to everyone.
