Special Notes on Repair Servicing

(1) Elimination of connectors (cable soldering to board)

In order to reduce costs, some connectors on the boards listed below are eliminated, and the
applicable cables are soldered to the boards. Accordingly, a set of board and cable is to be replaced
in repair servicing of them.
(a) Main board ----- Cable to the coin battery
The service part settings are as follows:

Adjustment / Settings

(1) Service mode

The basic operations are the same as those of the i70 / PIXUS 50i.
In this section, destination settings, how to reset the waste ink counter, and EEPROM information
printing, which differ from those of the i70 / PIXUS 50i, are detailed.
<Service mode operation procedures>
1) Turn off a printer. While pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press the Power button.
The LED lights green to indicate that functions are selectable.
2) While holding the Power button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (Do not release the Power
button.)
3) While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button 3 times, and then release the
Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the LED
alternately lights in either orange or green, starting with orange.)
4) When the LED lights green, press the Resume/Cancel button as many times as you need, to
select the preferred function. (See the table below.) Each time the Resume/Cancel button is
pressed, the LED alternately lights in either orange or green, starting with orange.

TECHNICAL REFERENCE

NEW TECHNOLOGY
(1) Highly weather-resistant ink is available (color ink only).
BCI-16 Color (highly weather-resistant ink) takes the place of BCI-15 Color.

i70 / PIXUS 50i
i80 / PIXUS 80i

BCI-15 Bk
BCI-15 CI
BCI-16 Cl

BCI-16 Color is NOT compatible with BCI-15 Color.

Although BCI-16 Color and BCI-15 Color are mechanically and electrically same, the color
conversion process of the printer driver is different. Use of BCI-15 Color on the PIXMA iP90 /
PIXUS iP90 (or BCI-16 Color on the i80 / PIXUS 80i) is not allowed to avoid undesirable
effects on printouts. However, use of BCI-15 Color on the PIXMA iP90 / PIXUS iP90 (or
BCI-16 Color on the i80 / PIXUS 80i) does not cause any mechanical damages to the printer.

(2) An ink saving function has been added.

In the Maintenance tab of the printer driver, by selecting the following two modes, an ink saving
function can be set. This function becomes effective only when the media type is plain paper. In the
default setting, the two modes are not set. The setting of two modes does not change until a user
command the printer to do so.
Save Black Ink mode:

Black-print duty is reduced to save black ink consumption. In this

mode, black printing is faint in some degree.

Use Composite Black mode: The black color can be available by using color ink even when
black ink is used up. In this mode, black becomes slightly
greenish.
With this mode enabled, the message which makes users
recognize that print quality may deteriorate, due to the setting of
Use Composite Black mode, is displayed on the screen every
time a print job is operated.
(3)

The following functions have been added to the Print Beam function.
a. AU pictographic symbols (Japan only)
b. QR codes (Japan only)
c. Reprinting function: By pressing the Resume/Cancel button, printing is preformed again.
(Image data only)

(4) Printing on plain paper is supported in PictBridge print mode.

When printing on plain paper, borderless printing is not possible. (Even though borderless print is
selected, a margin appears.)
(5)

In Setup Utility, PictBridge print mode setting is available.

(6) The ink absorber has a 20% longer life.

Approx. 20% longer life than that of the i80 / PIXUS 80i with the modification to the purging operation
sequence, although the ink absorber is the same as one in the i70 / PIXUS 50i and i80 / PIXUS 80i.

(7) The wait time of the print head before capping is reduced.
The period of time before the print head starts to move to the capping position from the home position
becomes 11 seconds. In conventional models, it was 55 seconds.
Reason:

To prevent removal of the power cord while the print head is at home position (meaning,
the print head is not capped).
The users may feel uncomfortable with an unforeseen frequent movements of the print head
(the print head scan sequence*1 before capping). Thus, possible claims are expected.
*1: An action which the print head makes two round trips, from the right to the left, to eject
ink mist:
This function was newly introduced with the i80 / PIXUS 80i.
Available when; Cleaning, Replacement of the print head and ink tanks, and Turning
off the power.

Print quality is rough.

When the printer driver Print

Options is set to "Change the
print data size to match the
port", transferring data is
compressed in Bluetooth /
IrDA infrared
communication.

1. Deselect "Change the print data size to

match the port". This causes data
transferring speed to become low.
<Procedure>
1. Set the following at the screen via the
printer driver (Properties -> Main tab ->
Print Options).
2. Set the print quality to Fine.
3. Set the Halftoning option to Diffusion in
the printer driver.
4. Print via USB connection.

Lamp
indication

The power lamp

continuously blinks,
twice in every 5
seconds, in green.

When Bluetooth / IrDA

infrared communication is
selected and the printer driver
Print Options is set to
"Change the print data size to
match the port"*1.
*1: In the default setting,
"Change the print data
size to match the port" is
selected, because of an
improvement of data
transferring speed in
Bluetooth / IrDA infrared
communication.
When Bluetooth
communication is used and
BJ Status Monitor is active.

This operation is not an error. Advise

users that it is not a problem. (See P.77
in Quick Start Guide.)

The power lamp

blinks.

Print
Beam

In printing from an
address book, a long
mail address is not
printed completely.

When BJ Status Monitor is

activated, the printer
regularly receives a signal
requiring status from a
computer.
(Bluetooth communication
specifications)
When printing on the credit
card size paper, due to
specifications in which a new
line is not added, a mail
address whose length is
beyond a paper width is not
printed completely.

Print on paper other than the credit card

size paper.

An address book is
not printed
completely.

When printing on the credit

card size paper.

* Occurrence level:
A: The symptom is likely to occur frequently.
B: The symptom may occur under certain conditions, but likeliness is assumed very low in practical usage.
C: The symptom is unlikely to be recognized by the user, and no practical issues are assumed.

Paper edge creasing
- About 30 sheets are loaded.
- Paper condition (curled, or cut

Depending on combination of the
above conditions, the first several
pages may not feed properly.

Printing

No infrared
communication

When the printer is connected

to a certain computer (eg.
NEC, Windows 98) which
does not support Plug & Play
infrared communication.

Cause
When many sheets of
paper are set, paper feed
capability can be
slightly lowered.

Solution
Reduce the number of sheets
set on the sheet feeder, to stay
below the reference mark.

Possible call or complaint

- Paper jam
- Paper edge creasing
- Paper edge smeared
(due to contact with the
print head)
- Carriage error (service
call error) due to contact
of the print head to the
jammed paper.

With default settings,

the Plug & Play
function is enabled.

Disable the Plug & Play

function, and set the port
manually.
For more details regarding
disable/enable Plug & Play
infrared Communication, see
page 2-1, New Technologies,
(3) in the PIXUS 50i / i70
Service Manual.

- Infrared communication
is not available.
