Student1isa6thgradestudentwithJuvenileglaucoma(aprogressiveblockingoffluid
thatincreasespressureintheeye),legalblindnessandvisualfieldloss.Shehasnolight
perceptioninherrighteyeand10/160visioninthelefteye.
AlthoughStudent1svisionisstablefornow,thereisapossibilitythatitcouldgetworse
inthefutureifthepressurefromthefluidsinhereyesincreasestoomuch.Shealreadyhasno
lightperceptioninherrighteye.Therefore,Student1isafullbraillereader.Sheproficiently
readsbraille(grade1and2)anduseslargeprintforsmallertaskssuchassolvingmathproblems
thatarewrittenontheboard.Sheismuchmoresufficientreadingbraillethansheisreadingprint.
GoalsandStateStandards:
VisionGoal:Giventhesameweeklyreadingprobe,Student1willincreasebraillereading
fluencyonherfinalreadbyaminimumof15%for5consecutivepassages.
Standards:
CC.1.1.1.E:Readwithaccuracyandfluencytosupportcomprehension.
Readonleveltextorallywithaccuracy,appropriaterate,andexpressiononsuccessive
readings.
Objectives:
Student1willreadapassageatleast3timesthroughouttheweektotrytoincrease
braillereadingfluencybyaminimumof15%.
InstructionalStrategies:
Student1receivesvisionsupportservicesforatleast2hoursadaytoworkonher
readingfluencyaswellasothertasksshemayneedtoknowforherclasses.Sheiscurrently
utilizingaprogramcalledTheSixMinuteSolution:AReadingFluencyProgram(Intermediate
Level).Thisprogramconsistsofstrictlygradelevelreadingpassages.Otherresourcesareused
outsideoftheprogramtoenhanceherreadingfluencysuchasvideospertainingtothetopicthat
shewatchesbeforetheinitialreadaswellasatactilechartthatshefillsinherscoreson.
DataCollectionProcedures:
TheSixMinuteSolutionprogramdoesnotcomewithanydatasheets.Thepassages
includenumbersontheleftsideofeverylinethatcountuphowmanywordsthereareuptothat
line.AfterStudent1readsapassage,thewordsthatshereadarecountedupandrecordedinthe
bottomrighthandcornerofthepassage.AfterIcountupthewordsthatshehasread,Itakea
tactilechartandoutlineaboxthatindicateshowmanywordsshehasread.Shethencolorsinthe
boxandkeepsabargraphasawaytoseeherownprogress.
IrecordedthescoresforeachSixMinuteSolutionthatStudent1completedinthe
thirdmarkingperiod.Afterlookingatthedata,Student1methergoalofincreasingherbraille
readingfluencyby15%.Thechartsthatfollowshowherprogressionthroughthereadingsof
eachpassage,herCWPMbytheendofeachpassageaswellasthepercentageincreasebythe
endofeachpassage.
