struggle for its independence from Mexico played a
major part of that history, and the battle of the Alamo
was a decisive battle

Technology (incorporated in lesson):

Teacher Laptop Computer
ELMO
YouTube video clip on the The Alamo, 13 days to glory

1. Big Understanding (Real World): History is all around us, understanding that history and how the
effects of the past may very well effect our future. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to
repeat it. Does anyone care to explain what they think that quote means? (Pass out K/W/L charts)
2. Catch/Hook/Engage: "Remember The Alamo!"
One of the most gallant stands of courage and undying self-sacrifice which have come down through the
pages of history is the defense of the Alamo, which is one of the priceless heritages of Texans. It was the
battle-cry of "Remember the Alamo" that later spurred on the forces of Sam Houston at San Jacinto. Anyone
who has ever heard of the brave fight of Colonel Travis and his men is sure to "Remember the Alamo."
3. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities
** Be sure to include any/all Grouping Patterns**
Teacher Input/Modeling: Read excerpts from the Remember the Alamo from the Texas Military Museum
Guided Practice: WE DO: Watch the short video clip and discuss the events that resulted as the loss of
the Alamo became the inspiring factor for future battles.

understanding also the major characters that participated in the defense of the Alamo.
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students): Write the Definitions for the new vocabulary
words and label them on the map as well. This serve as an additional check on learning as we will
exchange papers and grade them as soon as everyone is complete.
4.

Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:

What would result if the Texans had successfully defended the Alamo?
If you could have had an interview with Colonel Travis and General Santa Anna prior to the siege of
the Alamo what 3 question would you ask each of them?

5.

Ending, Summary / Reflection: Group discussion as the unit ends to ensure that the students have a clear
grasp of the battle for the Alamo. Round Robin question and answer session in which the questions where
formulated by the students and mixed in a hat. Each student will read the question aloud and I will decide
which student will answer the question.
6. Summative Assessment Evidence (remember you plan from this-backwards design): End of unit test
that covers labeling the map using the new vocabulary words in this lesson. The test will be 25 multiple
choice and 2 short essay questions, along with matching vocabulary words to the definitions.
