Yesterday I arrived at work with more excitement than normal, knowing that Moreys Piers and the
world-famous Harlem Globetrotters were about to make history. Little did I know, I would end up
helping them make history from 150 feet in the air.
On this hot summer morning, the marketing team scrambled around Surfside Pier in anticipation
of the arrival of Harlem Globetrotters Bull Bullard and Sweet J Ekworomadu. They were going to
make the Globetrotters first attempt ever at a trick shot from an amusement park ride, and they
were going to do it from the top of Moreys Piers heart-pounding AtmosFEAR ride.
After moving benches and trashcans, blocking off the area from guests and setting up the
basketball net, the Globetrotters finally arrived around 9:30am. As they were strapped into the
harnesses and slowly rose to the top of the ride for a practice shot, the marketing team watched
in awe from the ground with both hope and doubt in our minds. SHOOT miss.
They made their way back down to the ground for more basketballs. Next thing I knew, I was
getting strapped into a harness on the AtmosFEAR and had three basketballs thrown at me. I was
then sent 150 feet into the air with the responsibility of handing Bull and Sweet J their basketballs
(with the help of another Moreys Piers employee) as they attempted to make a successful shot.
Once I reached the top, I realized I had a beautiful view. When I looked down, I could see guests
having fun in the water park. When I looked to my right, I could see Moreys Piers' two other piers
and the rides that filled them. And when I looked straight ahead, I could see the beach and its
vast ocean, with boats far out in the foggy distance.
After about two hours of going up and down the AtmosFEAR and five more experiences of this
gorgeous view, I heard cheering from down below. Sweet J, the 12th female member in
Globetrotters history since the team was founded in 1926, made the shot! With hitting nothing but
the net, she became the first member of the world-famous basketball team to make a basketball
hoop from an amusement ride. And I got to hand her the history-making ball!
