A. MIXTURE CLASSIFICATION
Experiment 1
Experiment 1: Differences between Solution, Colloid, and Suspension
Objective: To learn the differences between solution, colloid, and suspension.
Tool s and Materials
1. Chemical glass of 100 mL
(12 pcs)
2. Stirrer
( 1 pc)
3. Funnel
( 1 pc)
4. Filter paper
(1 roll)
5. Sugar
(1g)
6. Flour
(1 g )
7. Instant milk
(1g)
8. Urea
(1g)
9. Soap
(1g)
10. Sulphur powder
(1 g )
11. Water
( as needed)

b. Procedure
1. Pour about 50 mL of water into the chemical glass.
2. Add one of sugar into the glass and stir it about one minute.
3. Let the solution for five minutes and make notes on what
happens.
4. Filter the mixture using filter paper and make notes on what
happens.
5. Repeat the procedure 1 to 4 using flour, instant milk, urea,
soap , and slphur powder.
Note : Stirrer and funnel should be rinsed and dried before used
to stir and to filter different mixtures.

d. Question
1. Classify the mixtures in this experiment into solution, colloid system, and
suspension.
2. Explain the differences between solution, colloid, and suspension.
3. What is your conclusion from the experiment?
Not: Make a written report on the experiment. Submit the result to your
teacher.
No.

1.

Homogenous, cannot be
distinguished although using ultra
microscope.

Homogenous if we observe it
Heterogeneous
macroscopically and heterogeneous if we
observe it using ultra microscope.
