FAMILY HISTORY

History Paves The Way

MY GRANDMOTHER
Born in Loachapoka Alabama 4/15/1933
She was born to my great grandparents Clint Moss AND Eara
Moss
My great grandparents immigrated from slavery and went on
to the live in the south

LIVING AND WORKING ON THE FARM

My grandmother lived on the farm that my great

grandparents owned they had chickens, cows, horses,

hogs

They raised sugar cane, made own syrup, and own

sugar

They butchered their own meat and made their own

clothes

Every thing they had they sold to make ends meet

Everyone including my grandmother and her sister

ages 2 and 8 years old picked cotton

NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT WORKING

Attitude towards work with my family was all positive

even through being poor they were dedicated and

worked from sun up to sun down.

While in the fields picking pecans from the pecan tree

or picking cotton all day in the south was a very tiring

job in the hot sun but they never complained

SUCCESS
Back then success to poor families meant get as much

education as you could and to maintain what little you

owned.

CHILD REARING HAS MADE A DRASTIC

CHANGE FROM TODAY
When my grandmothers was being raised in the 30s

there was no one person to discipline your child the

children were raised by everyone and there were no
rules on disciplining your child.

Todays society children are rarely disciplined and

there are agencies they have rules about disciplining

your child.

Rarely do parents let anyone discipline their children

today.

TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN

The most important lessons my grandmother was

taught was religion this was the key because then in

slavery days being boring in the south thats all you
had to rely on.

Education and obeying your parents were important

things her parents believed in.

DISCIPLINE
Belts were not a option in the 30s my grandmother

said they called in switching this would be the child

going to pick their own switch for parents.

MAJOR POLITICAL AND SOCIAL EVENTS

The great depression was one of the biggest events

then.

My family really had no social events besides church

because back then they had no rights.

Since they couldnt be political all they could do was

pray.

TRAVELING THROUGH THE NIGHT

My great grandmother walked 21 miles with my

grandmother and her sister to get away from the kkk

she walked at night and hid in barns during the day so
she would not be found.

My great grandfather was took to jail because the kkk

wanted to take over his farm and he fought back this

historic event is now in a book.

My great grandmother started working as a maid and

only made $7 a week.

HOLIDAYS
4th of July and Christmas were the only holidays my

family celebrated then.

For the 4th the school would have a ribbon cutting for

the children.

Christmas you got a apple or orange and homemade

toys.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

My grandmother Married my grandfather once she

moved to the north this was in the 50s she lived in

Middletown, Ohio and was 23 years old.

William Carleton Roberts is my grandfathers name

they have four children together three boys and one

girl all by the time she was 26

COURTSHIP
Guys always had to have permission from the girls
parents to see them and were only allowed to come
over on the weekends and parents monitored them and
stayed in same room

DIFFERENCE IN MALE/FEMALE ROLES

TODAY
Women were in the household being a homemaker or

taking care of kids.

Women today do every job that a man the only thing

women have not done yet is become the president.

Men are also staying at home with children now.

TECHNOLOGY NOW AND THEN AND LEISURE

TIME
Wagons were a form of transportation then or a train if

you had the money to ride one other than that

everything was pretty much word of mouth.

Leisure time was singing and storytelling

SCHOOLING IN THE 30S

Schools for the poor only went to grades 1st-6th grade

for children and after that you were on your own.

My grandmother walked 7 miles to school everyday

because of no transportation and no money.

PAVED THE WAY

My great grandparents and my grandmothers history

plays a big factor on my values and beliefs today.

Religion is a important factor in my life and its

something my family has never steered away from.

Working hard is a quality that I am glad they instilled

in me because there dedication is so motivating to

continue to strive for what I wont even through their
struggles and hard times they still worked hard and
never complained and learned to deal with what they
were dealt.
