Preliminary Report Format (Design Phase)

1. The title of the project

2. State all names of group members, and include email addresses
3. Give a project summary/abstract that is from 1/2 to 1 page long.
The summary should include:

A problem statement(s)

whether project is ongoing work inherited from previous students and which
work that is, OR if this is a new endeavor.

datasets being used, their source(s), format type(s), content (name a few
attributes)

what challanges you are addressing in this project

what is your planned method of solution (e.g. JAVA &/or CORBA, Isite &/or
ORACLE, GIS, datamining approach, Information Retrieval strategy....)

what results do you expect to show

This is not neccessarity a comprehensive list. You may add to this, but this submission
is not meant to be very long.
Keep in mind that this project will require a written report to be submitted at the end of
the semester. Specifications for that will be given later, but since you are already
beginning the implementation, keep in mind to place coherent comments strategically
in your code, and to develop pseudocode for critical portions, such as innovative
sections, or sections that would be difficult to follow with code-comments alone. If
your project involves a new or published algorithm, you would have pseudocode for
that in the body of the report. If your project was inherited from previous students,
and if there was no (or inadequate) documentation of that work, then you will need to
provide enough discussion of the previous work to make your new work presented in
your report coherent as a stand-alone document.
