This skill, this privilege, is something so simple yet so powerful that it is essential holding together the social composition of a nation. “With society and technology rapidly evolving, people must have the basic level of literacy to begin their lives in society” (“The Importance of Literacy in Today's Society” 3). However, due to the rapid evolution of the things in our world today, being able to read simple books and compose basic sentences is no longer enough. "Knowing the core knowledge of basic literacy is, just the beginning of today's survival in society, what is needed more is also the ability to communicate with others and also the ability to comprehend and solve problems and learn from these problems” (The Importance of Literacy In Today’s Society). In American culture, the os portance of education has been engraved in our brains and subsequently influenced standar us to further develop our skills as readers and writers. Although I do not agree with everything society stands for, I do, in fact, agree with society in the sense that literacy and education is very important. Afterall, knowledge is power." My pavents early on in my childhood got me engaged \ith literature by reading me bedtime stories every night before bed. “Reading aloud to children at an early age is the most effective way to help them expand their vocabulary and recognize written words. Reading also stimulates a child's imagination and expands his or her understanding of the world” (Pannenton). My parents knew how crucial literacy is for not only Lararas2 my child development but for creating a strong sense of intelligence and well-being. In an article about the importance of literacy in child development, the writer states, “Children who have developed strong reading skills perform better in school and have a healthier self-image. They become lifelong, learners and sought-after employees” (Pannenton). T strongly believe in the import enh is skill i portance of getting children involved with reading as early as possible, we need this skill in order to think crit se * to think critically and truly comprehend the world around us. 4, a" c os Technology is increasingly becoming a larger part of people’s everyday life. While this can be innovating and exciting as we proceed on into the future, the easy access of information can be dangerous and counterproductive. In an article published by the UCLA newsroom, the writer informs us that, “As technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have improved” (Wolpert). "Studies show that reading develops imagination, induction, reflection and critical thinking, as well as. vocabulary... Reading for pleasure is the key to developing these skills. Students today have more visual literacy and less print literacy. Many students do not read for pleasure and have not for decades." I can personally attest to this fact as I have realized that the majority of my time is spent on the computer and on my phone rather than reading books and taking notes with a pen ents in technology such as computers, smart phones, social and paper. Overall, the advancem: BAe emse media ete, has personally affected my literacy narrative in a negative way. From easy access to information on the internet, to the convenience of having autocorrect fix spelling mistakes, people are needing to utilize their literature skills less and less. Lazaras 3 In the beginning of this English class we read a book by Sue Monk Kidd called, “The Secret Life of Bees”. After finishing this book, I thought about how I personally connect Zach fora couple reasons. Being a black male in the 1960's was difficult at that time because they were widely generalized as unintelligent and insignificant to society. | deeply connected with Zach because he is a very driven and ambitious person who has big dreams that defy the norm of society tells him he is capable of achieving. Despite the fact that black lawyers weren't socially acceptable during his time period, Zach still aspired to do great things and become a highly literate, sophisticated lawyer. Although I don’t aspire to be a lawyer I can relate to his ambition and determination to take the risk of going against the norms of society. I have big dreams to become a highly successful international business woman who eventually starts her own organization that changes the lives of underprivileged people in third world countries. Although females tend to be stereotyped in the business world as submissive and incapable of surpassing eve that Iam just as eapable of being 2 strong business men’s achievement level, I strongly beli ‘These commonalities of ambition and social ae 8 leader who guides people to their fullest potential. defiance between Zach and I are the main connections I made with this novel. Out of all the articles we were assigned to read outside of class, I mostly connected to the author Sherman Alexie. Not only because I am also Native American, but because my father also played a major role in my literacy narrative. Similarly to Sherman Alexie I began reading iy father’s book from the countless piles he had stacked all in his office and bedroom shelves. All of these books had information in them beyond what I could comprehend at the time but I still picked them up and read each sentence even though I didn’t understand the meaning behind Lazaras 4 them. I remember one of the first times when I picked up one of his self-help books with regards to business I was probably about eight years old. picked up one of the books in my dad’s office as he sat in his big cushiony chair working on what appeared to be computer work. I looked up to him and said, “Hey dad, can I read this pwease?” then he said “Sweetie I don’t think you'll be able to read that quite yet. Once you get older you will”. I remember that this moment was the birth of my motivation to prove him wrong. I've always been driven to do things when people AS tell me I can’t, so I made the commitment to finish this book of his from start to finish even if didn’t fully understand the content.
