Doctors - The Adult EWS Escalation Protocol

YOU are the primary responder to patients


triggering Early Warning Scores (EWS)
EWS 4-5 or any vital
sign in the gold zone

EWS 6-7 or any vital


sign in the orange zone

House Officer review


within 60 minutes

Registrar review within


20 minutes

On review of the patient please complete the red Activation of EWS


system sticker in the patients clinical record and provide a plan of care
including parameters for acceptable vital signs.
If you are happy to tolerate abnormal vital signs/Early Warning Score for the patients clinical condition, please
complete the Modification to EWS contained in the blue box on the Vital Sign chart.
If the patient is NOT for MET or CPR calls, please ensure this is documented in the clinical record.
Any modification to the EWS escalation protocol must be reviewed by the primary team every 24 hours.

Call 777 Medical Emergency Team (MET) for any patient you are seriously concerned about.
Please note MET calls are MANDATORY for patients with any vital sign in the pink zone or a total EWS of 8 or more.
