Many people around the world choose to learn English in order to advance

academically and economically in their lives. As global English proficiency

increases, so do the disadvantages for non-English speakers as they get left out of
opportunities. With the worldwide growth of English, more than half of the
worlds English-speakers are ELLs. Many different forms and dialects of English
have developed and as ESL instructors, we need to find the balance between
respecting our students shared knowledge and helping to move towards a form of
more globally-recognized, academic English.
