I. Objective: Explain the importance of a forest ecosystem
II. Subject Matter: Forest Ecosystem
References: Into the Future: Science and Health 6 pp. 74-76
EPOW pp. 114-117
Family Encyclopedia p. 353
Materials: manila paper, marker, pictures of a forest ecosystem
III. Procedure
A Preparation
1 Review: Relationships in an Ecosystem
2 Review Drill
B Developmental Activities
1 Motivation: Poem about a Tree by Joyce Kilmer
TREES
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the Earths sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray.
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Presentation
The poem tells us about a tree. You learned that there are many trees
and other plants in
the forest.
Are forest resources important to us? Lets find out.
3 Activity/Discussion
Problem: Why is a forest important to us?
a. Sharing ideas on the importance of the forest.
b List down the ideas that were shared.
c Report output in class.
4 Generalization
A forest is a large ecosystem. Plants in the forest use sunlight,
nutrients in the soil and air
to make food. Different kinds of animals feed on plants and other
animals.
A Forest ecosystem is important because:
1. They are homes to wildlife.
2. They serve as watersheds and protectors of soil.
3. To people, they are sources of lumber and other materials.
4. Forests clean the air of carbon dioxide, which could, otherwise,
trap heat in the
atmosphere.
5. The trees in the forest release a great amount of oxygen in the
air needed by

animals and man.

I. Objective: Explain how overpopulation disturb the interrelationship in an

ecosystem.
II. Subject Matter: How Overpopulation Disturb an Ecosystem
Ref. Into the Future: Science and Health 6 pp. 84-92
EPOW 6 pp. 132-135
Internet
Materials: flashcards, pictures of organisms
III. Procedure
A. Preparation
1. Review: Importance of a Forest Ecosystem
2. Review Drill
B. Developmental Activities
1. Motivation: Call some pupils to arrange the organisms on the chalkboard
to form a food
chain
2. Presentation:
Unlock the terms organism, population and overpopulation. Present to
the pupils the problem, What might happen if there is an overpopulation
of secondary consumers in the food chain?
3. Activity/Discussion
Procedure
1. Let each group, study the illustration of two aquariums on p. 91 of their
science book.
2. Let the pupils infer what might happen to the fishes in the two
aquarium.
a. In which set-up, A or B, will there be more abundant dissolved
oxygen for the fishes?
b. In which set-up is space limited for the fishes to move?
c. In which set-up will there be more competition for food among the
fishes?
d. In which set-up is there an overpopulation of fishes?
e. Will overpopulation affect an ecosystem?
f. How did overpopulation disturb the aquarium ecosystem?
3. Does overpopulation affect the interrelationship of organisms in an
ecosystem?
4. How will overpopulation of one kind of consumer affect the
interrelationship in a food chain?
5. There are more animals and man than plants in an ecosystem. How will
this situation disturb the oxygen-carbon dioxide cycle?
6. What are the harmful effects of overpopulation in an ecosystem?
4. Generalization
Overpopulation is a condition where an organisms number exceed the
carrying capacity of its habitat. It does not depend only on the size or

density of the population but on the ratio of population to available

sustainable resources. Clean water, clean air, food, shelter, warmth and
other resources are necessary to sustain life.
Overpopulation of a particular kind of animal species can cause
imbalance in an ecosystem. It occurs when an ecosystem is unable to
support the existing wildlife because there are too many of them. Due to
lack of food and limited space, overpopulated species wander into other
ecosystems causing disruption. It disturbs the natural cycles in an
ecosystem. It can result to lack of food, space and other needs of
overpopulated organism resulting to ecological imbalance and destruction
of the environment.
5. Application
Study the food chain that was arranged in the chalkboard and answer the
following questions

1. What will happen to the rice grains if there are too many rats in the rice
field?
2. What might happen to the rats if there is an overpopulation of snakes?
3. What is the effect of too many snakes that will eat the rats to the
number of rice grains?
4. What can you say about the number of snakes if there are too many
eagles in the ecosystem where they belong?
5. If there are many eagles that will eat snakes, what is its effect to the
number of rats?
6. Evaluation
Answer the following questions. Explain the effect of overpopulation in
the following
Situations.
1. There are few grasses and many deer in the forest.
a. Deer will go to another place to look for food
b. Deer will have more food to eat.
2. There are more tigers than zebras .
a. It will disrupt the food chain where tigers and zebras belong.
b. It will cause a balance in the ecosystem.
3. There are a lot of crocodiles than fishes in the pond.
a. The crocodiles will compete for food.
b. The crocodiles will have enough food to eat.
4. Too many fish in a pond
a. Limited space
b. More oxygen
5. More secondary consumers than primary consumers
a. It will disturb the interrelationships of organisms in a food web.
b. It will ensure the survival of organisms in a food web.
IV. Assignment

Write down five destructive practices or activities of man that affects an

ecosystem.
