Generic digital switching

Telecommunication networks carry information signals among entities, which are

geographically far apart. An entity may be a computer or human being, a facsimile
machine, a teleprinter, a data terminal and so on.
The communication switching system enables the universal connectivity. The
universal connectivity is realized when any entity in one part of the world can
communicate with any other entity in another part of the world. In many ways
telecommunication will acts as a substitute for the increasingly expensive physical
transportation.
The telecommunication links and switching were mainly designed for voice
communication. With the appropriate attachments/equipments, they can be used to
transmit data. A modern society, therefore needs new facilities including very high
bandwidth switched data networks, and large communication satellites with small, cheap
earth antennas.
Introduction to Generic Digital Switching System
Meaning of Generic
In broader sense, generic refers to a group or class not having a brand name.
Generic function: a computer programming entity made up of all methods having
the same name
Generic programming: a computer programming technique that allows a
method/function or class to be defined, irrespective of the concrete data types
used upon instantiation
Generic switching: The program is often called a generic because it is designed to
allow its switching system to operate in any location

A reliability model for hypothetical digital switching systems was explained. Different
hardware and software components of the digital switch was described and analyzed.
So far, the main principle of working of the hardware and software implemented
was never discussed. The main objective of Generic Digital Switching is to develop a
detailed model of hardware involved in switching process. The functions of
hypothetical GDSS is to simplify the working process of the overall hardware and
software architectures involved from the transmitting to receiving destination.
Scope:
GDSS has its wings in variety of fields, the hardware and software helps to trace
and reveal the calls and other functions of operational digital switching system.

The other useful features of GDSS is seen below,

The Digital Switching System (GDSS) technology costs more than discrete switches.
Why should a customer go with it?
Although the initial material cost for the GDSS system might exceed that of
discrete switches, the total cost of the acquisition is significantly less. Typically, the
GDSS solution reduces system wiring (and associated installation labor) by
approximately 40 percent over discrete switches. Extra components required to deliver
features such as timers, dimmers, H Bridges are eliminated. These features are all
enabled in software. Additionally, because the system is completely sealed and
impervious to harsh environments, routine maintenance and warranty costs are greatly
reduced.
GDSS has a variety of solutions at different price points to meet every budget.
Solutions are offered at or below $15 per circuit depending on volume and options.
What are typical applications for GDSS?
The GDSS technology is an ideal solution for marine, and transportation
switching applications. However, customers from other industries have seen the huge
benefits of our power distribution products and GDSS currently has units installed on
outdoor equipment, industrial, first responder, construction equipment, emergency
vehicle, and recreational vehicle applications. Completely sealed and maintenance-free,
the keypads and load controllers are designed to meet the harsh requirements imposed by
these industries.
