Communication

Begin by singing Youre the One Who Sees Me There or I Need To Talk To You
Settling in:
Provide pairs with a feelings list and encourage them to share with their partner when theyve felt some of them
(excited/nervous/proud/disappointed). Display images of various scenarios and in pairs children can discuss the
emotions they think might be present, encouraging empathy/understanding of the feelings of others e.g. an image
of: a child sitting in an exam/people waiting to shout surprise at a surprise party/a child caring for an unwell
adult/ a child waiting by a window.
Stimulus:
Choose one of the images or a new one that has particular relevance to your class at the time (Exam time?
Transition time? Friendship issues?)
Key Question: How is this person feeling? Why?
Key Question: What could they do to begin to deal with how they are feeling?
Time for reflection:
Key Question: Why is it sometimes difficult to open up about how we are feeling?
Positive conclusion:
Display images of families/friends/places of worship/clubs and explain that feeling alone can make the emotions we
feel even harder to deal with. Explain that sharing how we feel and talking to those we trust can really help.

Continue the learning:

Set up an ideas board where children can pin advice cards about how theyve positively dealt with a
given emotion. Model a few for the children and to get the board started.
