Esholt WWTW - Vibro stone and concrete columns

General view of the construction site

Project Description

Design Solution

Improvements to the Esholt wastewater

treatment works in Yorkshire require a new
activated sludge plant comprising a massive
reinforced concrete tank, 204m long 80m wide
with perimeter walls 6.5m high.

Working in conjunction with consultant Carl

Bro and main contractor Morgan Est Pennines
geotechnical engineers were able to design a
scheme using 5000 vibro stone columns and
600 vibro concrete columns. Close co-operation
including
programming
additional
site
investigation following land remediation,
enabled the reuse of excavated material from
other areas of the site as well as providing data
to enable Pennine to rationalise their design to
suit the varying ground conditions and the range
of bearing capacities.

Soil conditions below the tank range from

competent sand and gravel overlying coal
measures and bedrock of variable quality, to
made ground and weak alluvial clay and sand
and gravel. The site had also been used for
waste tipping as well as a slurry lagoon.
The sludge plant required bearing capacities
ranging from 75kPa to 180kPa, total settlement
was to be less than 30mm with differential
settlement limited to 1 in 500.

The 300,000 subcontract will support

Yorkshire Waters total spend of 64million to
meet new EU discharge regulations.
