appropriate
student behavior.

The most successful classes are those in

which the teacher has a clear idea of what
is expected from the students and the
students have a clear idea of what the

Preparation

What is Classroom
Management?
Classroom management is all the
things a teacher does to organize
students, space, time, materials, so that
a student learning can take place.
The most important thing a teacher
can provide in the classroom during the
first week of school is consistency.

Using Routines and

Procedures

Procedures Are Effective

Management
Procedures are simple methods or
process for how things are to be
done in a classroom. Harry Wong
DISCIPLINE: Concerns how students BEHAVE.
PROCEDURES: Concern how things are DONE.
DISCIPLINE: HAS penalties and rewards.
PROCEDURES: Have NO penalties or rewards.

Procedures and Routines

Procedure: What the teacher wants done
Routine: What the students do automatically

The number one problem in the

classroom is not discipline; it is the
lack of procedures and routines.
Harry Wong
**Do not call a procedure a rule

Main Reasons Why Students

Do Not Follow Procedures
Dont know them
Have not been taught
Have not practiced them Show video clip #13 Tight Transitions
Video: Teach Like a Champion by Doug
Lemov

There Must be a Procedure or Set of

Procedures, for Everything
What will students be expected to do:

When entering your classroom (Web activity)

When the bell rings *(prompts on board, work on desk,
journaling/problems, group projects, project list, other)
When their pencil breaks
When they have late work* (airplane story)
When they correct homework
When they need supplies
When they finish their work early
When they have a question
When they need to use the restroom
When they are absent * (assignment books/planners, list on board, file
folder for each class period, classroom assignment notebook, website,
others)
When they exit your class
When another adult or student walks in the room

Directions
Teacher has students number
off in their group.
The teachers poses a
question.
Students put heads together.
Teacher calls time and spins
to see which team member
will answer the question.
Team member that answers
can not have any help from
team mates.

Ideas For My
Classroom

When groups complete task

they celebrate with a group
cheer

Examples: Content: Test or Material Review; Teambuilder: review class routines and
procedures

Reinforce Procedures
1. REMIND the class of the procedure.
2. Have the class EXPERIENCE the
procedure.
Example
Remind: Class, I would like to remind you of the procedure at
the end of the period. You are to remain at your desk
until I dismiss the class.
Experience: Look around the room. You are all at your desk
(and your chairs are pushed in). This is the correct
procedure, and I thank you for doing it correctly.
Well done. Please do it again tomorrow. Have a nice day!

Ineffective vs Effective
Teachers
Ineffective teacher begins the first day
of school attempting to teach a
subject and spends the rest of the
year running after the students.
Effective teacher spends most of the
first week teaching the students how
to follow classroom procedures.

Cooperative Learning Structure: How

will you engage students?

Preparing for the 1st Day

Talking Chips
Students share their quotes and 30 second speech with 3-4
students. Use a structure like Talking Chips as a protocol for a
small group discussion.
Talking Chips Directions
Each student has one talking chip (bingo chip, pencil, or
anything tangible).
Students place their chip in the center of the team table
each time they talk.
Students can speak in any order, but cant speak a second
time until all chips are in the center. (students practice
respectful listening)
When all chips have been placed (everyone has spoken),
the chips are all collected and anyone in any order can
speak again.

Learning Targets
I can write, explain, rehearse,
and reinforce my classroom
procedures and expectations.
or
I can write my first day script
which will incorporate my
classroom procedures.
