Shenandoah Valley Reading Council is proud to introduce our new updated logo. We
have worked hard this summer with many individuals to complete this process. Mr.
Christopher Michael, an art teacher in the Rockingham County Public Schools,
helped facilitate this change with his artistic talents. A huge thank you for his many
designs and recommendations!
As a new year begins, we hope you find yourself refreshed, excited, and ready to
explore learning with a new group of children and lots of books. Several
professional books we encourage you to check out are listed as follows:
In Defense of the Read Aloud by Steven Layne
Literacy Survival Tips by Lori Oczkus
Interactive Think-Aloud Lessons by Lori Ockus
In the Best Interest of Students by Kelly Gallagher
In thinking about education and beginning another year with 25 years plus
experience from each of us, wed like to share two bits of advice given to us through
school board members. First of all, teachers were acknowledged for all of their hard
work and reminded that they make a difference every day! Dont forget that.
Even if it is small difference, keep making a difference. Secondly, another school
board member shared personal stories and even got a little teary when reminding
us to love the children and work to keep learning new uses for technology. There
was encouragement to keep the children the center of the learning process!
We hope you will renew your membership to Shenandoah Valley Reading Council
(SVRC) which also includes membership to the Virginia State Reading Association
(VSRA). Join by September the 15th for your chance to win a FREE T-Shirt! There are
many wonderful events planned for this upcoming year! PLAN to attend the Pizza
and Pinterest Party on September 15th at John Wayland Elementary. See the
attached flyer.
