CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS

BOARD OF TRUSTEES YEAR-END MESSAGE

The 20112012 school year at the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) was filled with challenge, change and accomplishment. After five years with CCSD, Dr. Lucy Miller announced her retirement. This led to a nationwide search and extensive stakeholder consultation, resulting in the hiring of Gary Strother as our new chief superintendent. The Board of Trustees is confident that Mr. Strother will continue to build on the excellent reputation of the district as an educational leader. The school year also saw the unprecedented initiative, Help Plan Our Future, set the stage for the creation of optimal learning environments for our students. Help Plan Our Future ultimately resulted in the board approving the closure of two schools and four programs, and redistributing resources to support learner success. The Board of Trustees also had opportunities throughout the year to connect with our parents and engage in discussions on a variety of issues during Parent Trustee Forums. Meetings were held throughout the year to address topics including the budget process and priorities, and new report cards. Provincial events have impacted Calgary Catholic this year as well. The provincial election has seen the appointment of Jeff Johnson as the new Minister of Education. Alberta Education is currently reviewing the School Act and the government engaged Albertans in discussions around the future of education through several public participation initiatives to provide input into the new legislation. CCSDs board of trustees actively provided feedback into these initiatives and into the proposed new legislation to ensure the districts perspective was considered. The proposed Education Act was introduced in the legislature as Bill 2 but time did not permit it to be passed before the provincial election was called. It is expected that the bill will be reintroduced by another name, likely in the fall. It will be important for all of us to ensure that any new Education Act reflects what we value as a Catholic school district. The board has been active in advocating on behalf of our Catholic families and we will continue to work with the government in the coming months. Placed against the backdrop of constant change, the Board of Trustees would like to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of the district. Our students have enjoyed tremendous success this school year, and we know that without the dedication and continued support from the Calgary Catholic community, that this would not be possible. Success in learning requires faith, energy, dedication and teamwork. We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to the many parents, teachers, support staff, caretakers,

administrative staff, volunteers and business partners who have shared their time and talents with our school community. Your interest and prayerful support is very much appreciated and our success is in no small part because of your effortsyou have made a difference! We look forward to the 20122013 school year and the opportunities that it promises. Sincerely,

Mary Martin Chair, Board of Trustees

CHIEF SUPERINTENDENTS YEAR-END MESSAGE

In January 2012, it was my privilege to be appointed chief superintendent by our Board of Trustees, and I assumed my new role in March. I was humbled by the opportunity to lead the outstanding staff of the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) and to work with our experienced and focused Board of Trustees. We have a lot to be proud of at Calgary Catholic and I remain committed to continuing the momentum of moving the district forward guided by shepherd leadership, relationship building, transparency and shared responsibility. This year, we established a new spiritual theme, Love one another as I have loved you and continued with our academic theme, Learning is the Work. Our themes guide our reflections and practices throughout the school year for all district staff, and provide focus to our work. Creating learning environments where all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential is a top priority of CCSD. In February, the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation awarded 51 grants totalling $800,000 to 42 Catholic schools to fund worthwhile school projects and enhancements to supplement the success of students. Over the past two years, the foundation has provided a total of $1.8 million in grants that were used to fund new technology, fine arts enrichment activities, physical education activities, school enhancements for libraries and musical instruments. Contributions from the Linda and Clayton Woitas family, a collection taken at parishes on Catholic Education Sunday, and funds raised through other generous donors made this years grants possible. During the 20112012 school year our district continued with a process of public consultation, known as Help Plan Our Future. This process began in 2010 with initial discussions seeking public input into several specific issues. These initial sessions evolved to include all district programs and schools in order to give parents, staff and trustees opportunities to work together to strategically plan how to best serve all of our students. Public meetings were held in November and December 2011, during which CCSD asked communities to look at its overall program and accommodation planning; provide feedback into possible program relocations and closures; and possible school closures. The input received from all meetings was compiled and analyzed and used to develop final recommendations. Ultimately, our Board of Trustees made the decision to approve the

closure of two schools and four programs, and to move a number of programs to different school locations. Closing a school is never an easy decision, but through the Help Plan Our Future process we were confident that the decisions made were informed by input from our community and were in the best interest of all students. Our Catholic faith is an integral part of all that we do in our district and I want to thank Bishop Frederick Henry for his spiritual guidance and his ongoing support of our district. I also want to thank our staff, trustees, parents and community partners for all that you do to support the students in our care. I also want to acknowledge and thank our ATA, CEP, and CUPE employee groups for your commitment and leadership. Sincerely,

Gary Strother Chief Superintendent

CALGARY CATHOLIC IN STAMPEDE PARADEWATCH FOR US!

On July 6, 2012, Calgary Catholic trustees will take part in a time-honoured event: the Stampede parade. Riding in a heavy horse hitch wagon, the trustees will greet the festive crowd with smiles and waves. Participating in the parade gives us the opportunity to celebrate our rich local history, support our community, while promoting the district to thousands of people in a low cost, fiscally responsible way. The Board of Trustees have been parade participants for the past two years with the first time marking our celebration of the districts 125th anniversary. The parade is the official kick off to the 10-day outdoor festival and draws an audience of about 350,000 in downtown Calgary. This years parade features more than 750 horses and 4,000 people with 170 entries.
