GULF STANDARD GS 452/1994 3- DESCRIPTION ‘The constituents of paint shall be thoroughly ground and it shall have a homogeneous consistency by normal manual stirring. Coating shall be easy with a brush or a roller and in case of coating with spray the paint shall be diluted with a suitable thinner. 4- DEFINITIONS 4.1 Luminance factor: the ratio of the luminance of a nonluminous body, under specified conditions of lumination and observation, to the luminance of a perfect white standard diffuser receiving the same luminance. 42 Reflectorization: addition of the glass beads on to a painted surface before it has dried to improve the incident light to be reflected back at night in direction of the source of illumination. 5- GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Appearance ‘After 24 h the thin coating layer shall be smooth, half glossy, well-hiding, homogeneous, free from liquefaction, graining and crispation and the coating surface shall be dry and capable of accepting subsequent suitable coating layers without causing it to be softened, peeled or crumbled and the final appearance shall be half glossy. 5.2 The coating shall be capable of retaining glass beads at a rate of 90%. 5.3. Maintaining of properties on storing The paint coating shall maintain its properties when left in the airtight original containers, at (25 + 2°C) for a period not less than 12 months without formation of a frozen peel on the surface or thickening of texture during this period and when precipitation happens it may be remixed easily. 6- COMPOSITION “The composition ratios of road marking paints shall be either of the two following types: ‘Type (A): is the base alkyd or varnish and plasticized materials, ‘Type (B): is the base acrylic and vinyl and plasticized materials; ‘They shall comply with the ratios mentioned in Tables (1), (2), (3) as follows: GULF STANDARD GS 452/194 6.1 Tables (1) and (2) show the ratio of compositions of road marking paint (white colour) for two types (in original containers) Table (1) % (Weight) Compositions ‘Type (A) (Alkyd or Varnish) Titanium dioxide 15% min. Diffuser, emulsified and 34% min, suspended agents Alkyd or varnish 15% max. Chlorinated rubber 3% min, Aromatic and aliphatic 31% max. hydrocarbon volatile materials. Table (2) % (Weight) ‘Compositions ‘Type (B) (Acrylic, Vinyl and Plasticized) ‘Titanium dioxide Diffuser, emulsified and suspended agents Acrylic, vinyl and plasticized Aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon volatile materials 15% min, 39 % min. 15% min. 31% max, GULF STANDARD GS 452/1994 Note: For obtaining yellow paint, substitute the titanium dioxide with lead cromate at the ratio shown, provided that it shall comply with the other characteristics and requirements. Tables (3) and (4) show the ratio of compositions of road marking paint (black colour) for two types (in original containers), Table (3) Compositions % (Weight) ‘Type (A) (Alkyd or Varnish) Solid materials 65% min. Chlorinated rubber 5% min. Table (4) Compositions % (Weight) Type (B) (Acrylic, Vinyl and Plasticized Materials) Solid materials 64% min, Acrylic, vinyl and plasticized 22% min. 7- PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS 1 72 Consistency The paint shall give by normal manual stirring a suitable homogeneous consistency that can be easily coated with a brush, a roller or coating equipment used for road marking. In the case of spray painting, the paint shall be deluted by a suitable solvent at aratio of 10% to 20% by volume. Drying time ‘The thin coating layer conditioned for test according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.2 shall be as follows: GULF STANDARD GS 452/194 721 722 13 74 15 16 a 78 19 7.10 It shall have a dry surface according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.3 within an interval not exceeding 15 min. It shall have a dry hard surface according to the Gulf standard in 2.4 within an interval not exceeding 24 h. Fineness of grind Fineness of grind number shall be (3-5) measured by Hizman scale (100) micron. Flash point Flash point shall not exceed 23°C according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.5. Viscosity Viscosity shall be not less than 7 poise measured at 25°C according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.6. Opacity (ratio of variance) ‘On examining the coating layer according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.6, the ratio of variance hiding power shall be determined by using a painting brush 200 micrometer gap. ‘The opacity shall be not less than: 90% for road marking white paint, 80% for road marking yellow paint. 100% for road marking black paint, Flexibility On testing the paint, applied to a chromated soft aluminium test panel to give a dry film of 50 +5 j1m thickness, according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.6, using type (A) apparatus with a 12 mm diameter mandrel, the paint film shall show no signs of flaking or cracking or any other defects. Resistance to grit abrasion When the paint is tested as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.1, the substrate shall not be visible at the area of grit impact, Resistance to bleeding (of colour) When the paint is examined according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.1, there shall be no difference in the colour between the painted area on the asphalt and that area painted on the adhesive transparent tape. Resistance to petroleum fuel When the paint is examined according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.1, there shall be no signs of flexibility, blistering or crispation compared to a layer of the same paint prepared in the same manner but has not been subjected to petroleum fuel resistance examination. GULF STANDARD GS 452/194 7.11 Resistance to salt solution When the paint coating is examined according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.1: 7.111 No transpiercing shall appear in the paint coating through which the test panel surface can be seen. 7.112 After removing the test panel as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.1, the paint under test shall not show any difference in colour or blistering or flexibility or crispness or any other effects compared to another test panel prepared in the same manner but was not exposed to the said test. 7.12 — Resistance to artificial weathering When a chromated hard aluminium test panel is paint coated and exposed to antficial weathering as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.8, for 500 h, the coating shall not show any signs of blistering, checking, cracking or flaking ‘compared to another test panel that has been prepared in the same manner but has not been exposed to test. The luminance factor after test shall be at least as follows: White = 75% Yellow 55% Black not applicable. 7.13 Water The ratio of water in paints shall not exceed 0.5% by weight when carrying out the test as described in the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.9. 7.14 Specific gravity Gn carrying out the test according to the Gulf standard mentioned in 2.105 the specific gravity shall be not less than 1.5 for road marking white paint, not less than 1.4 for road marking yellow paint, and not less than 1.2 for road marking black paint. 8- PACKING AND LABELLING Paints shall be packed in clean, sound and tightly sealed containers that do not react with the contents, Containers conforming to relevant standards shall be filled with paint up to 95% of their volume, with the following information declared on their labels: 1- Name of manufacturer or trademark. 2- Paint colour. 3.
