GULF STANDARD U.A.E. STANDARD No. 494/1994 No. 494/195 METHODS OF TEST FOR PAINTS AND VARNISHES — DETERMINATION OF DRYING TIME (UNTIL HARDNESS ) United Arab Emirates Standardization & Metrology Organization for G.C.C. (GSMO) P.O. Box - 85245 RIYADH - 11691 METHODS OF TEST FOR PAINTS AND VARNISHES — DETERMINATION OF DRYING TIME (UNTIL HARDNESS ) ics 87.040 This Standard is issued on the basis of the decision of the Board of Directors in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Council of the G.C.C. States in its Third Session, held in Bahrain on 1403-01-23 (corresponding to 1982-11-09). Note: This test is considered unsuitable until the paint layer reaches a stage of drying at which it is difficult to deform or redistribute the paint layer over the surface by th examination plunger equipment. ‘The test shall be carried out on the paint layer, either after a certain period of time (24 h), (as go-no go test) to determine its conformity to the requirements of this standard, or be carried out at time intervals until satisfactory results are obtained. 2- COMPLEMENTARY INFORMATION The procedure of testing mentioned below requires complementary information to be completed when applicable. This information shall be drawn from relevant Gulf standards or any other standards relating to the material under examination or as agreed on between the purchaser and manufacturer*. Nature of the surface. Method of applying paints to the examination panels. Thickness of dry paint layer in micrometers, and whether it is one layer or multicoated. Time and nature of drying n examination, essary for primary coating and/or inner coating before Time and nature of drying necessary for one layer or multilayer coating before examination. GULF STANDARD GS 494/194 3- COMPLEMENTARY RE RENCES 3.1 GS 498/1994 “Methods of Test for Paints and Varnishes - Preparation of Test Panels Before Coating”, 4- PREPARING AND COATING OF EXAMINATION PANELS 4.1 Use coated or galvanized steel or aluminum panels, if not specified in the Gulf standard mentioned in 3.1. 4.2 Prepare the examination panels as specified in the Gulf standard mentioned in 3.1 and coat when necessary with suitable primary paint or inner coating paint and allow to dry. 4.3. Coat the panels with the material to be examined, using a suitable method and allow to dry or roast (ie. heat to dry), by the specified method for a certain period of time. In case it is to be dried under normal conditions, this will be done under conditions of temperature (27 + 2°C) and relative humidity 60% - 70% with free ventilation and nonexposure to direct sunlight guaranteed. 5- APPARATUS 5.1 Details of the apparatus used are as shown in figures 1, and 2 5.2 The apparatus shall consist of a plunger (A) of 24 mm diameter, its end contacts at 6 mm deep with commercial rubber of good type loaded with a weight (B) so that the weight of plunger group is 1.8 kg. Cover the top of rubber joint connected with the plunger with a textile piece weighing 240 + 40 g/m2, 3 x 1 Twill weave having 100 longitudinal base lines and 54 cross lines for every 25 mm. Fix the textile piece with a clip (C), in such a way that the longitudinal face be to the outside, so as to avoid appearance of any folds or creases on the plane surface. 5.3 Start the plunger by electronic motor - movement transfer hump (D) shall automatically lower the plunger on the examination panel after start of rotation. Care shall be taken so as to have the warps parallel to the panel surface. The plunger shall be redrawn when connected with the examination panel after rotating through an angle of about 270°, and rotation speed of approximately 6 r/m. 6- PROCEDURE 6.1 Determination of drying time After the lapse of a suitable drying time interval (not to be less than the expected drying time) the examination shall be carried out as mentioned in 6.2. GULF STANDARD GS 494/1994 Repeat the examination procedure at specific and agreed time intervals until the paint layer is dried until hardness. 6.2 Go-no-go test Immediately after defining the drying time interval, fix the examination pane! under the plunger with the painted side facing the plunger surface. After the plunger is lowered on the examination panel, and then redrawn, the panel shall be removed and the test area examined by correct normal vision. The paint layer shall be considered dry until hardness if the panel surface is not scrubbed off (or the next paint layer in case of multicoatings). 6.3 In case no agreement on the examination conditions has been reached, the test shall be carried out at a temperature of (27 + 2°C) and a relative humidity of 60% - 70%. ST REPORT The test report shall contain the following information: ~ Identification of the material under test. - Number of the Gulf standard or the product specifications, or any other document specifying the complementary information necessary for carrying out the examination (see item 2) - Any deviation from the test procedure, - Examination results. ~ Examination date.
