The Lost Piece of Silver

By Rose Rogers
We will explore a deeper meaning to the parable of the Lost Piece of Silver by searching the Scriptures
for interpretations for the symbols used in the story.
8 What ___________ having ______ pieces of ____________, if she lose ______ piece, doth not light a
__________, and _________ the __________, and seek diligently till she find it? 9 And when she hath found it,
she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I
had lost. 10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that
repenteth. (Lu 15:8-10 AV)

The Woman
I have likened the daughter of ________ to a comely and delicate __________. (Jer 6:2 AV)
________ that trust in the ________ shall be as mount ________, which cannot be removed, but abideth for
ever. (Ps 125:1 AV)
And the dragon was wroth with the __________, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which
________ the ________________________ of ______, and have the __________________ of __________
____________. (Re 12:17 AV)

Throughout Scripture we find many instances where a woman is used to illustrate the group of people
who trust in the Lord, and specifically the church who keeps the commandments of God and has the
testimony of Jesus.

The Silver
The ______ of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of ________ and ____________. (Ps 119:72 AV)

What are the ten pieces of silver in the law?

1) 1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the
land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have ____ other ________ before ____. (Ex 20:1-3 AV)

2) 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any ____________ __________, or any likeness of any thing that is in
heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not ______
________ thyself to them, nor __________ them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And
shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Ex 20:4-6 AV)

3) Thou shalt not ________ the ________ of the LORD thy God in ________; for the LORD will not hold him
guiltless that taketh ______ name in ________. (Ex 20:7 AV)

4) 8 Remember the ______________ day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10
But the ______________ ______ is the ______________ of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any

that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and
rested the ______________ ______: wherefore the LORD blessed the ______________ day, and hallowed it.
(Ex 20:8-11 AV)

5) Honour thy ____________ and thy ____________: that thy days may be long upon the land which the

10) Thou shalt not __________ thy neighbours __________, thou shalt not __________ thy neighbours
________, nor his ____________________, nor his ______________________, nor his ____, nor his ______,
nor ______ __________ that is thy neighbours. (Ex 20:17 AV)

The story of the lost piece of silver is a prophecy telling us that God's people would lose one of the ten
commandments.

The Candle
The woman lights a candle in search of the lost piece of silver. What kind of light source would God's
people need in order to find one of the ten commandments?
Thy ________ is a ________ unto my ________, and a __________ unto my ________. (Ps 119:105 AV)
To the ______ and to the __________________: if they speak not according to this ________, it is because
there is no __________ in them. (Isa 8:20 AV)
We have also a more sure ________ of ________________; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a
__________ that ______________ in a ________ __________, until the ______ ________, and the ______
________ arise in your hearts: (2Pe 1:19 AV)
The Word of God is represented multiple times in Scripture as a lamp or light. But notice in this parable, that the
commandment was lost during a time of darkness when the candle was not lit. We find a parallel prophecy in
Revelation 11 that pinpoints this time of darkness:
2 The holy city shall they tread under foot __________ and ______ ____________. 3 And I will give power
unto my ______ __________________, and they shall ________________ a ________________ ______
_____________ and ____________________ ________, clothed in sackcloth. 4 These are the ______
__________ __________, and the ______ ________________________ standing before the God of the earth. ...
11 And after __________ ________ and an ________ the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they
stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. 12 And they heard a great voice from
heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld
them. (Re 11:2-4, 11-12 AV)

In prophetic time periods we find that a month was equal to thirty days. (See Genesis 7:11, 24; 8:3, 4.)
Thus the two time periods given in verses two and three above are the same length of time: 1,260 days.
In prophetic time, a single day is a symbol equal to one literal year. (See Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6.)
This time period of 1,260 years is mentioned seven times in Scripture in different ways. (See Daniel
7:25; 12:7; Revelation 11:2, 3; 12:6, 14; 13:5) In every case it refers to the same period of time when
the Scriptures prophesied in sackcloth. During the dominion of the Papacy from 538-1798 the light of
truth from the Scriptures was nearly extinguished. During this time one of the commandments became
lost. After this time when moveable-type printing was invented and the Scriptures became available to
every household, people began studying again in earnest. (See also The Great Controversy, 265-288.)

The Sweeping
The woman not only lights a candle but has to sweep in order to find the lost piece of silver. What kind
of sweeping would God's people need to do in order to find the commandment which was lost?

________________ also will I lay to the ________, and __________________________ to the

______________: and the ________ shall __________ away the ____________ of ________, and the
____________ shall overflow the ____________ place. (Isa 28:17 AV)

The House
The woman in the parable swept the house to find the lost piece of silver. What house would God's
people have to sweep in order to find the commandment which was lost?
(For if a ______ know not how to rule his own __________, how shall he take care of the ____________ of
______?) (1Ti 3:5 AV)
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to ____________ thyself in the __________of
______, which is the ____________ of the living ______, the ____________ and ____________of the
__________. (1Ti 3:15 AV)

The people of God had lost the commandment right within the walls of the church itself under the
accumulation of lies and cover of darkness.

Conclusion
Christ gave in a simple parable of only three verses a prophecy of events spanning nearly two millenia.
He told how a woman, having ten pieces of silver, would lose one during a time of darkness. Then she
would light a candle, sweep the house, and find the piece that she lost. Then she would call her friends
and neighbours to rejoice with her over the piece that she had found.
The people of God fled into the wilderness in 538 to escape persecution. During that time of darkness,
they lost one of the commandments. But sometime after 1798 the church began studying the Scriptures
in earnest. They swept away the refuge of lies and sought diligently until they were able to find that lost
commandment. Now the people which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of
Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:17) are telling everyone they can about the commandment that was lost
and is found again.
The book, The Great Controversy, chapter 3, An Era of Spiritual Darkness (pages 49-60) graphically
describes this time period when the commandment became lost. The Great Controversy, chapter 25,
God's Law Immutable (pages 433-450) tells the story of the time when the lost piece of silver was
recovered. If you do not have a copy of this book, please contact us and we will be happy to send you
one.
Many of God's people yet today who believe in keeping the commandments by the indwelling power of
the Holy Spirit do not realize that they are missing one piece of silver. Please help us spread the word
so that all of God's people can rejoice with those who have found the piece that was lost.
