Program foundations
1. Science, Technology and Society (STS)Students will develop an
understanding of the nature of science and technology, the relationships between
science and technology, and the social and environmental contexts of science and
technology.
2. KnowledgeStudents will construct knowledge and understandings of concepts in
life science, physical science and Earth and space science, and apply these
understandings to interpret, integrate and extend their knowledge.
3. SkillsStudents will develop the skills required for scientific and technological

Course Outline
Module 1 Les intractions et les cosystmes Sept/Oct
1. Investigate and describe relationships between humans and their environments.
2. Trace and interpret the flow of energy and materials within an ecosystem.
3. Monitor a local environment, and assess the impacts of environmental factors on
the growth, health and reproduction of organisms in that environment.
4. Describe the relationships among knowledge, decisions and actions in maintaining
life-supporting environments.
Module 2 Les plantes, source de nourriture et de fibres Nov/ Dec
1. Investigate plant uses; and identify links among needs, technologies, products and
impacts.
2. Investigate life processes and structures of plants, and interpret related
characteristics and needs of plants in a local environment.
3. Analyze plant environments, and identify impacts of specific factors and controls.
4. Identify and interpret relationships among human needs, technologies,
environments, and the culture and use of living things as sources of food and fiber.
Module 3 Les structures et les forces Jan/ Feb
1. Describe and interpret different types of structures encountered in everyday
objects, buildings, plants and animals; and identify materials from which they are
made.
2. Investigate and analyze forces within structures, and forces applied to them.
3. Investigate and analyze the properties of materials used in structures.

4. Demonstrate and describe processes used in developing, evaluating and improving


structures that will meet human needs with a margin of safety.
Module 4 La Terre March/April

1. Identify evidence for the rock cycle, and use the rock cycle concept to interpret and
explain the characteristics of particular rocks.
2. Investigate and interpret evidence of major changes in landforms and the rock
layers that underlie them
3. Describe, interpret and evaluate evidence from the fossil record.
4. Describe and demonstrate methods used in the scientific study of Earth and in
observing and interpreting its component materials.
Module 5 La chaleur et la temprature May/Jun
1. Illustrate and explain how human needs have led to technologies for obtaining and
controlling thermal energy.
2. Describe the nature of thermal energy and its effects on different forms of matter,
using informal observations, experimental evidence and models.
3. Apply an understanding of heat and temperature in interpreting natural phenomena
and technological devices.
4. Analyze issues related to the selection and use of thermal technologies, and explain
decisions in terms of advantages and disadvantages for sustainability.
Throughout many of these topics we will practice such scientific skills as making proper
measurements, in the correct units and proper notation (standard vs. scientific), reading
information from a periodic table of elements, graphing, and using a microscope correctly.

Evaluation Procedures
Each of the three terms during the school year will have a combined value of 90% and the
final exam will count for the remaining 10% of your mark. Each term mark will be
determined in the following manner:

Labs must be read and understood and the purpose, hypothesis and procedure must be
finished prior to the lab class. Following instructions and safety precautions are essential
in the lab--failure to do so will result in exclusion from lab activities.

Classroom citizenship deals with you, the student, coming to class on time and prepared
as well as appropriate behavior and attitude in the classroom. A classroom functions well
when everyone contributes to the classroom environment. That includes respecting other
peoples space and their ability to work.

A three ring binder USED FOR SCIENCE ONLY
A ruler
An ample supply of lined paper, unlined paper and graph paper
A blue or black ink pen, a red pen, a pencil and eraser, and 3 or more colored
markers or crayons
6. 5 duo tangs 4 duo tangs for final units and 1 for a lab book (must be handed in at
the beginning of the year)
You will be required to bring these materials with you to every science class. How well you
are prepared will be reflected in your classroom citizenship mark.

Policies
1. Students must be on time and ready to work with all required materials.
2. Any missed notes or assignments must be completed. It is the students
responsibility to find out what was completed during his/her absence.
3. Incomplete and late assignments are the responsibility of each student to get
completed. Students that are missing assignments will be required to set a
deadline to get the work completed or risk having to come in after school for a work
period.
