Using the 3 Wire Method to Measure Threads

Why do we have to use the 3 wire method?


One of the reasons why we need to measure threads using the 3 wire method is because it is
impossible to measure the diameter of a threaded object directly therefore we need to use
specialized thread micrometres to do this by just measuring the diameter of the wire that seems
to sit perfectly in the thread. Therefore using 3 wires with the same known diameter this makes
our readings of the thread pitch more accurate and precise.

Another reason of using the 3 wire method is for accurate measurement and dimensions of pitch
diameter of a thread, which presents certain difficulties which result in some uncertainty as to its
true value. This adoption of such a standard uniform practice in making a dimension of the
thread to reduce uncertainty of measurement to a minimum.
