1st Grade Homework Policy

We believe that 1st grade homework should provide a meaningful way for families to
engage in student learning.
We believe in the balance of work and play and acknowledge that our Firsties have a
long day at school (and for many a long commute). All homework is intended to
support student learning and should take no more than 15 minutes per night (plus 15
minutes of reading). If your childs homework is taking longer than this, please email
the teacher to work together to find a better plan.
We believe that homework should be flexible to allow for sports, family fun and
other activities so we assign homework for a full weeks time, including the weekend,
to allow families extra time to complete projects together.
We believe that first grade projects should look like a first grader made them!
Phonetically spelled words, stick-figure drawings and large printing are examples of
developmentally appropriate representations of your childs abilities! Please resist
the urge we have as parents to take over the project and fix it 1st grade
teachers LOVE seeing your childs best work at a first grade level.
Homework will be assigned on Monday and will be due on the following MONDAY.
(Example: Week of 8/31-9/4, Homework is assigned on Monday 8/31 and is due on
Monday 9/7). Activities can be completed during the week at a pace that best suits
each student/family.
