ExitTechnique#2.Thirdeyeescapemethod

Onceyouarecompletelyrelaxed,concentrateontheareabetweenyoureyesonyourforehead.This
isalsocalledthe"thirdeye"Ithasbeenlinkedwithpsychicabilitiesthroughouttheages.Inactuality
thereisaglandinthatapproximateareaoftheheadcalledthe'pineal'gland,whichhasbeen
believedtobethe'link'betweenthephysicalandspiritualbeing.
Stillconcentratingonthisarea,rollyourstillclosedeyesupwardtothisposition.Donotstrainthem,
itshouldnotbeuncomfortable.Onlyrollthemasfarbackasiscomfortable.Whileinthisposition
andstillcompletelyrelaxed,'will'yourselftoleavefromthisposition.

ExitTechnique#3.6:00AMinthemorningmethod
Setyouralarmclockfor6:00AMandgotobedbetween10:00and11:00PM.Whenyouwakeupat
6,walkaroundthehouse,watchT.V.,getonthecomputer,etc.for2030minutesuntilyoufeelfully
awake.Thengobacktobed,asyoudriftintosleeptrytostayasawareaspossible.Whenyoureach
thestatewhereyouarealmostdreaming,yetstillawake,thenyoucanletyourselffalltosleep.This
maytakeafewdaystowork,butyoushouldwakeupinthedesiredtrancestateabout550minutes
afteryouletyourselffalltosleep.Whenyoufindyourselfinthedesiredtrancestate,whereyou
cantmoveandyouhearvibrations,youcanjustrolloveroutofyourbody.Besuretogetawayfrom
yourbodybecauseitcanpullyoubackin.
ExitTechnique#4.The6FeetMethod
Soundssimpletodoasyoupictureyourselfabout6feetfromyourselfthen..transferyour
consciencetothatform.,lookingaboutyouwiththeeyesofthatform.Thenvisualizethepersonor
placethatyouwishtotraveltoo.Tovisitandcommunicatewithwhomyouwishtotalkto.
Thissoundseasybuttakesalottovisualizeyourselfinanetherbody..withallthedeterminations
youcanmusterandtransferyourwilltoit.
Somepeoplehaveahardtimeandwithpuredeterminationcanmasterastralplainingwhileothers
havetolearntocontrolastheyhavewhatisreferredtoasalooseastralbody.

ExitTechnique#5.Affirmation
Yoursubconsciousmindisapowerfulthing,andyoucaninfluenceitbyrepetativesubtlenightly
affirmations.Theseshouldbeverypositiveinnaturesoastodecreasefear,andincreaseyou
subconsciouswilltoexperiencefullyconsciousastralprojection.Irecomendusingyourownwords
astheywillhavethemostmeaningtoyou,howeverhereisonethatIwrotethatIfindparticularly
effective.
"Iamaspiritualbeing,andAstralProjectionisanaturalpartofwhoIam.WhenIfallasleeptonight,I
willhaveanoutofbodyexperience,withnofears,andwhenIwishtoreturntomyphysicalbody,I
willdosoeasily.WhenIawakenIwillremembertheeventinfulldetail,andwithelation."
Everynightbeforeyougotosleep,recitetheaboveaffirmation(oryourown)toyourselfthree
times.Forsomereasonthreeworksbetterthananyothernumber.Morethanthreetimesseemsto
increaselossofinterest,andlessseemstonothaveasstrongeffectonthesubconscious,andafter
all,thenumberthreeisbelievedtoholdsignifigantpower.Justbeforesleepalsoseemstobethe
timewhenthemindseemsmostopentothepowerofsuggestion,andinfluencetothe
subconscious.
ExitTechnique#6.TheAnchorTechnique
Thisisanotherpopulartechnique,whichproducesanethericprojection.
Thebasisofthismethodistofocusonananchorpointoutsideofthephysicalbody.Therearetwo
basicvariationstothistechniquethefixedanchor,andthemovinganchor.
Aswithallthetechniquesdescribed,adeeplevelofrelaxationisrequired,anumberofrelaxation
techniquescanbefoundhere.
Onceyouhavereachedaverydeeplevelofrelaxation(trancestate),youmustthenuseyourpowers
ofvisualisation.
ExitTechnique#7.TheFixedAnchor
Althoughnotmentionedasfrequentlyasthemovinganchortechnique,Ifindthistheeasierifthe
twomethods.
Afterreachingthetrancestate,focusonapointoutsideofthephysicalbody(e.g.attheendofthe
bed).Youcaneithersimplyfocusonapointinspace,oryoucan(andIfindthismucheasier)imagine
anobjectatthatpoint(itusuallyhelpsifitisafamiliarobjectIalwaysimaginemytobaccotin).
Onceyoucanclearlyseethefocuspointinyourmindseye,'feel'howsoliditis.Trypushingitaround
withyourmind,trypullingit,ormovingit.Thefocuspointshouldbetotallysolidandentirely'fixed'
whereitis.Noamountofmentalmanipulationshouldbeabletomoveit.
Oncethefocuspointistotallyfixed,imaginereachingoutwithyourarmsandgrabbingholdofthe
focuspoint(object).Remember,thisWILLNOTMOVE.Now,trypullingtheobjecttowardsyou,
gentlyatfirst,andthenharderandharder.Graduallyasyoupullyouwillfeelyourselfmoving
towardsthefocuspoint(insteadofviceversa).Finallyyouwillfindyourselfatthefocuspointoutside
yourphysicalbodyPresto,you'vedoneit.

ExitTechnique#8.TheMovingAnchor
Afterreachingthetrancestate,imagineanobjectabout6feetinfrontofyoureyes(assumingthat
youarelyingdown).Onceagain,makethisafamiliarobject.Now,feelthisobjectpullingatyou(like
amagnet).Onceyoucanseetheobjectclearlyinyourmindseye,andfeelthepulloftheobjecton
you,begintomovetheobjectslowlytowardsyou.Justasmallamountatfirst(perhaps6"toafoot),
astheobjectmovestowardsyoufeelthepullgettingstronger.Nowmoveitbackagain(thepullgets
weakerasyoudo).Nowrepeattheprocess5or6timesmovingtheobjectclosereachtimeand
feelingthepullbecomingstrongerandstrongerastheobjectcomescloser.
Onceyouarecomfortablewiththemovementoftheobject,begintheprocessagain,onlythistime
themovementoftheobjectshouldbeafluidmotion,andastheobjectmovestoandfroitshouldbe
likeawave.Youshouldalsofeelthiswaveonyourselfasthepullgetsstrongerandweakerand
strongeragain.Finally,astheobjectvirtuallyreachesyou,thestrengthofthepullingforce,combined
withthewavelikemotionwillsimplypullyourightoutofyourphysicalbodyWahay,you'vedoneit
again.

ExitTechnique#9.AstralArmsBreakingThrough
Laydowninacomfortablepositionwithyourarmsextendedaboveyourheadandbentattheelbow
atabouta100degreeangle,butstillrelaxed,andlayingonthebed.Takeamomenttocompletely
relaxyourselfuntilyoufeeltired.Closeyoureyesandpictureyourastralarmsslowlymovingupand
outofyourphysicalarms.Makesureyouarenotthinkingofanything.Justpictureyourarmsslowly

movingoutofyourbody.Asyouaredoingthis,pushupwithyourastralarmsashardasyoucan.
Don'tletthismoveyourphysicalarmorflexyourphysicalmuscle.Don'tthinkofanythingotherthan
theimageofyourarmsslowlymovinghigherandhigheroutofyourphysicalbody.Afterawhileyou
shouldbefeelingyourbodyswayingabit;don'tletthisdistractyou.Eventuallythevibrationswill
kickinlightlyandwhentheydo,don'tletitdistractyouorthey'llstop.Justdon'tthinkconsciously.
Theywillescalateintoverystrongvibrations.Thenyoucanjustsitupwithyourastralbodyandroll
overoffthebedtogetyourlegsout.
ExitTechnique#10.FloatingBalloon
Firstyoubeginasyoualwaysdoandassoonasyouhavethosevibrationsthenyouwanttogetthe
floatingfeelingright?Wellallyouhavetodoisthis:
Imagethatthereisalargeballoonfloatinginthe
skyaboveyou.Ithasalongandglowinggold
stringandtheballoonislargeandglowingwhite.
Nowimagetheballoonfloatingdowntowards
you.
Atthistimeyoushouldhavethegoldenstring
attachitselftoyourcrownchakra,asifyourbody
wasaweightholdingtheballoondown.
AstralSexmadebyRevenantakaSlaygen
Nowbeginatthefeetandimagineawhitelightslowlyworkingit'swayupyourbodyasthiswhite
lightiscomingupthelengthofthebodyitshouldformintoaballshapeandgrowninsize.
Whenthelightistothetopofyourhead,imagineitleavingthroughthecrownchakraintothe
goldenstringandfromthestringintothe"empty"balloon.
Nowdoingsoyouhavefilledtheballoonwithenergy,thusgivingit"lift"power.
Imagetheballoonstartingtofloatintotheairandtrytoseethingsasifyouwheresittingonopof
theballoon.
Thisshouldhavetriggeredaprojection.
ExitTechnique#11.DynamicConcentrationMethod
TheparticipantwouldconcentrateonOOBE's,andletitconsumealloftheirthoughts,untilthatwas
theonlythingontheirmind.Onewaytodothisistothinkaboutitintheformofaquestion,orpose
aproblemthatyourconsciousmindhastoanswer.Donotanswerthequestionatfirst,justletitstay
inthebackofyourmind.Howeveryoushouldthinkabouttheproblemoverandoverthroughoutthe
day.Ifdonecorrectly,you'llfindyourselfthinkingabouthowitmightbepossibleforyoutoproject
atthemostunusualtimes.Sincethesubconsciousmindlikestosolveproblems,thisproblemwillbe
echoingthroughyourmindquiteoften.Thefirstdayyoumightnotnoticeanything.But,usuallyafter
thesecondorthirddayyouwillseeresultsfromthismethod.Anotherpartofthemethodisto

concentrateoneverysquareinchofyourbody,releasingitastrally,asyoudriftofftosleep.With
practice,youcangetoutmerelybywillingyourselftogetout.Thequestionpartofthismethodhelps
addfueltothefire,whentryingtoproject,andmakesitmorelikelyforyoutoprojectfromalucid
dreamintheinstancethatyoumightfallasleep.
ExitTechnique#12.CountingYourWayintoSleep
SettingUptheExpectationofaSpiritualTravelExperience
Thisexerciseinvolvescountingasonegoestosleep.Thefirststepistochooseanumberbasedon
howsleepyyoufeelanddecidethatyouwillbeasleepbythetimeyougettothatnumber.Ifyouare
sleepy,choosethenumbertwentybutifyoufeelmoreawake,youcanchooseahighernumberlike
fifty.
Thenextstepistotellyourselfthatyouwillwakeupassoonasyouenterthesleepstateasthe
numberisreached.Youcansuggestanenvironmentthatyouwillwakeinandvisualizeit,orsimply
choosetobestandingintheroomnexttoyourbedoutsideofyourbody.
Thenbegincountingyourwayintosleep.
ExitTechnique#13.Creativevisualizationtechniques
Creativevisualizationmeanspicturingsomethinginyourmind,andisusedasformofconcentration.
TherearemanytechniquesusedtoinduceAstralProjectionthatinvolvecreativevisualization.
Beforeyoucanstartvisualizing,however,youmustbecompletelyrelaxed.Irecommendusingthe
bothprogressiverelaxationtechniqueandoneofthevisualizationtechniques.Severalexamplesof
visualization/imaginationareincludedbelow:
1.)Imaginethereisaropeextendingfromtheceilingtoyourbody,ataboutthesolarplexus(mid
chest).Fromtherelaxedstate,mentallyimagineclimbingthisrope.Feelasifyouareclimbing
upward,pullingyourconsciousnessalongwithyou.Don't'picture'therope,butinstead'feel'itasif
youwereinthedark.Feelyourhandsmovingoneoveraotherandpullingupwards.
2.)Imagineflyinghighintheair,likeabird.Manypeoplehavesaidthatduringalucidflyingdream
theyhaveinducedAstralProjection.Mentallyfeelthesensationsofglidingalongridingthethermals.
Then,tryto'breakaway'fromyourflightpath,andoutofyourbody.
3.)Visualizeanobjectabout3metersinfrontofyourbody.Distinguishitsshape,color,andsize.
Next,onceyouhavetheobjectfullyvisualized,mentallywalktowardsit.
4.)Imagineyouarerockingbackandforth(donotreallyrock),feeltheimaginaryrockingand
graduallyincreaseituntilyoureachacriticalpointandrolloutofyourbody.

WhenIwasyoung,Iusedtolovetrains.SometimesIusedtovisualizethevariousthetraincars
designingthecontentsofthesleeper,diner,entertainment,andloungecars.Iwouldcreatemyideal
trainonthewayintosleep.Iwouldmovefromcartocardescribingandvisualizingelementsofthe
environmentsuchasseating,windows,andthecolorsandtexturesofsurfaces.
Sometimes,IwouldfindthatmydreamwouldtakeupwheremyvisualizationsendedandIwould
continuedesigningandridingthatidealtrainduringthedream.BecauseIenteredthatdreamstate
whileinvolvedinacreativeactivity,Iwouldsometimesfindmyselfinanexpandedstateof
awarenessandabletocontroltheprogressofthedreamtovaryingdegrees..
Thesevisualizationsandtheresultingdreamexperienceswereantecedentstospiritualtravel.
Gettinginvolvedinavisualizationthatcrowdsoutallothersensationsonthewayintosleepisone
waytoinitiatespiritualtravel.Creativeinterestinasubjectmatterisinmanycasesalessstressful
andmoreenjoyablemethodofenteringintospiritualtravelstatesthanalternateapproachessuchas
concentrationexercises.Paintersandmusicianscancomposecanvasesandmusicalscoresusing
muchthesametechnique.
ExitTechnique#15.Jac'sDualFocus:AuditoryandRespiratoryAPTechnique
Summary:ThisisthefirstofafewtechniquesthatIwillcreateusingaDualFocusmethodthatcame
tomewhilepracticing.Togivethistechniqueaserioustry,wouldrequireyoutotryitforatleast
sevenormoredaysstraight.It'sbestifyoucommitittomemorybeforeattemptingtouseit.The

Technique:
PositionandComfort
Beginbygettinginyourusualmeditationposition.Thisisapositionthatonlyyoucandecidefor
yourself.It'scomfortableenoughthatyoucansleepinit,yetyouseemtobemoreattentiveinit
overothersleepingpositions.
Begintodowhatisnecessarytofindcomfort.Scratchthoseitchesthatwon'tsubside,openthose
fingersalittlemoretorelievetensionanddowhateverelseittakestogetyourbodyreadytobe
forgottenabout.
ThoughtClearingandInitiationofDesire
Nowclearyourthoughts.Thinkofnothingforacoupleofminutesotherthanhowniceitistobeso
comfortableandrelaxed.Clearyouremotionsaswell.Beforeyougofurther,youneedtobring
peacetoyouremotionsandfindenjoymentinthistimethatyouhavetomeditate.
Ifyouhaveafavoriteaffirmation,nowwouldbeagoodtimetosayitinyourmind.Itwillgetyou
readyforthefeelingofdesire.Ifyoudon'thaveone,youcanrepeatthisafewtimes:"Iammore
thanthisphysicalbody.IAstrallyProject.IwillremainconsciousduringthisjourneyandIwillretain
itsmemories".
NowyoumustinitiateyourdesiretoAP.AtanytimeduringthedayifyouthinkaboutAstral
Projection,youprobablythinktoyourself,"I'dlovetodothat."Atthistime,however,andforthe
restofyourmeditation,youmusthaveadeepfeelingofdesireforit.It'sstrongerthanasingle
thoughtoraffirmation.Thisisafeeling,notwords,andcanbeaidedbyyourimagination.Thisfeeling

isalongthelinesofadeeplovethatyoumayhaveforsomeone.
InitiationoftheDualFocus
Begintoslowyourbreathingtoarhythmthatisalittleslowerandalittlelongerthanyournormal
breathing.Nothingforcedhere.Thisshouldhaveanaturalfeeltoit.Ifdoneproperly,yourbreathing
shouldbecomealmostsilentandlessnoticeable.Maintainthisrhythmthroughtherestofthe
meditation.
Listenforaringingsoundinyourears.Itmaystartoutasaveryfainttone.Placeallofyourattention
onitandbegintoraiseitsvolume.Continuetoraisethevolumeofthetoneforaslongasyoucan,
higher,andhigher,anddonotfearthatyou'regoingtoreachapointthatisdangerous.Whenyou
feelthatyou'veincreasedthepitchandvolumeofthetonetoitshighestlevelgotothenextstep.
Doaquickcheckofyourbodymentallytonoticeifyouhavestiffenedanyofyourmuscles.Ifyou
haveflexedmuscles,relaxthemnowandtheyshouldremainrelaxedthroughtherestofthe
meditation.
Finally,throughtherestofthemeditationcompletelyfocusallofyourawarenesssimultaneouslyon
yoursmoothrhythmicbreathingandthetonethatyou'vebeenhearingandraising.Keepstrivingto
increasethepitchandvolumeofthistoneasyoualsokeepyourconcentrationsplitandfocusedon
yourbreathing.Donotgiveuporgetdiscouragedifatanytimeyouloseyourfocusofeitherone.
Justregainfocusofitassoonasyoucan.Continuethisstep,untilyoucanjuststepoutofyour
physicalbody.
ExitTechnique#16.TheGazingTechnique

Thisistobedonewhengoingtobed.Youneedsomethingtofocuson;ifitisinviewthemoon,the
stars,acrystal,afavoritedollwillworkwell...Usewhateveryoulike.
JustnotaCandleoranythingthatburns!
Thismethodinvolvesthebodyfallingasleep,andyoushouldneverleaveanythingthatburns
unattended.Iusuallyusemycrystalballforthis.
Placetheobjectwithinyourviewandliedowninyourbed.Juststareattheobjectasyoudozeoff.
Thefirstfewtimesmaybefrustrating.Youmayjustfallasleepandthat'sit.Butafterafewtries,this
workedforme.
Keepstaringattheobject.Asyoureyelidsbecomeheavy,keepstaring.Eventuallyyoureyeswill
close,butyouwillstillbeabletoseetheobject.Youwillstillbestaringattheobject.Situporstand
up,anddon'tbesurprisedtoseeyourphysicalbodysleepingpeacefullyinyourbed!
Thisworksfairlywellforme.Whenyouareoutofyourbody,dowhateveryouwish.Iamstillgetting

snowingandIcouldn'tgetoutofmydriveway)soItookthatopportunitytooversleepandIhad5
projectionsthatday!Ofcourse,ifyouhavechildren,pets,noisyneighbors,busyplansforthatday,
it'snotgoingtobeconduciveforyou,butstill,it'sagoodtechniqueandsomepeoplehavecontrol
overtheirweekendschedules.

RobertA.Monroe,whobegantoexperienceinvoluntaryOutofBodyExperiences(OBE)in1957.
Theseearlyexperienceshavebeendocumentedinhisfirstbook"Journeysoutofthebody"(Monroe,
1971).ItwasalsoduringthistimethatMonroediscoveredthatsoundpatternscouldinducecertain
statesofconsciousness,whicheventuallyledtothecreationoftheMonroeInstituteandpatented
soundtechnologycalledHemiSync.
WhiletheearlyexperiencesofMonroewereoftencharacterizedbyasensationofleavingthebody
hisdevelopmenttookadifferentturninlateryears.Monroediscoveredthe"quickswitch",which
allowedhimtomovefromone"location"toanotherinaninstantbystretchingorreachingoutwith
hisconsciousness.Eventually,thisledMonroetoconsiderthe"secondbody"tobenomorethan

Ithinkit'simportanttorealizethattheideaof"gettingthere"stemsfromourphysicalexperiencein
spaceandtime.However,forconsciousness,thereisnosuchthingasthereandhere.Youmaysay:
"That'sallveryniceandphilosophical,butpracticallyspeaking,Iamtryingtogetfromonestateto
another,andtherefore,Ihavetogetthere."
Buthowdoyouexpectto"getthere"?Youcertainlycan'twalkthere.Soifyoufollowthatlineof
reasoningwhatexactlywillyoudotogetthere?Thisisexactlytheproblemwithsuperimposingthe
limitationsofspaceandtimeonconsciousnesstheideathatyouhavetodosomething.
Factofthematteris,thelessyoudo,theeasieryouwillgo"places".Ofcourse,atsomepointor
anotheryouwouldwanttosetanintent.Youdon'tnecessarilywanttobesteerlesslyfloatingona
universalseaofconsciousness.Butingeneral,afteryouhavesetyourgoalorintent,thelessyoudo
afterit,theeasieritwillbe"togetthere".
Sodon'tgettoocaughtupinany"method"or"technique".Rather,ifanythingdescribesasuccessful
progressionthroughvariousalteredstatesofconsciousness,isthatconsciousnessbecomes
increasingflexibleandreceptivetoalternateformsofrealityorganization.Isupposethisstateof
awareness,andindeeditisastate,isbestdescribedasmellowandgentle.Thisisnotamindlessor
selflessstate,butastateofmindinwhichfeelcomfortableandrelaxedwithoutputtingpressureon
yourselftoperformorfixateyourself.
Soperhapsit'sbesttoforgetabouttechniquesandfirsttrainyourselftobeinarelaxedstateof
awareness,whichisevenmoreimportantthanphysicalrelaxation.Thisrelaxedstateofawarenessis
anawarenessthatissimplyopentoexperienceanddoesn'tcontinuallyasksitselfwhetherit's
"there"yet.Yousimplycan'tbullyyourselfintoanotherstate.Rather,cultivateacertainsenseof
mellownesstowardsthewholephasingapproach.
Often,ifyoufindyourselfhavingdifficultythisisbecauseofnotdistinguishingbetweentelling
yourselftorelax(whichcangoonadinfinitum)andbeingit.Thatisnotsomeesotericidea,butquite
apracticalandliteralone.Sojustrelaxandyouwillfindallthingsflowfromthere.
Preliminaryconsiderationsconcerningfocus10
ThewholebenefitofphasingasopposedtotheclassicOBEliesintheconceptofreducedsensory
awareness,andbeingabletoremaininsuchastatecomfortablyandwithoutfear.Soinorderto
benefitfromsuchanapproach,onehastostartoutwithabaselineofsorts,andbecomefully
comfortablewithit.
Sowhatisthisbaselineabout?Thebaselineisbeingabletobeinastateofreducedsensory
perception,withoutanyexcessivegoalsandambitions.Itisaboutbeingabletostayinthislevelof
awarenessoffocus10foraprolongedperiod,learningtorecognizeit,andbecomingvery
comfortablewithituntiloneisboredwithit.Itisimportantnottosettoomanygoals,sinceifthe
goalistooambitious,ratherthansimplyholdingthestateforalongtime,onewillnevergetusedto
thisstate.Thebarhasbeensettoohigh.Soputallambitionsasideandstarttoworkonthesimple
goalofbeingcomfortableinastateofsensoryreduction.
Itisnotthathardtoreachalightfocus10,orexperiencethepreliminarymarkersofthisstate.What
ismuchharderistoapproachitwithoutsettingtoomanyscarygoals.Because,really,Icanseeno
greaterbarriertophasingorOBEingthanfear.That'swhyitissoimportanttofirstdissolvethatfear,
andbeforprolongedperiodsinthisstateofawarenessofreducedsensoryperception.

Focus10.Asimplisticdefinitionismindawakeandalert,bodyasleep.Themindisslightlyoutof
phasewithnormalphysicalwakefulness.Itisastagewhereallfivephysicalsensesseemdetunedor
reducedinstrength,anditisthebeginningofobjectiveperceptionofperceptionin(M)fieldenergy.
Obviously,thisideaofreducedsensoryperceptionisfarmoreaccuratewaytodefinefocus10than
theideaofthebodybeingtotallyasleep.Afterall,howwouldyoubeabletohearMonroe'sverbal
messageswhenyourbodyistrulyasleepwhileusinghistapes?Soinfact,theearlystagesoffocus10
dealswithareductioninsensoryinput,whicharenotdistributedequallyoverdifferentsensory
modalities.Now,thisisnotthathardtoreach.Itwherethesensesoftouch(thecutaneoussenses)
seemmuted,theperceptionofyourbodyseemstobeinhaze,andyoustillfeelyourbodytosome
extent,butnotasmuchasusual.Iffocusingonit,youarestillverymuchinfocus10.It'snotlikethe
experiencehasstopped.Youdonothavetogoinwardand"seeimages"tobeinfocus10.Thekeyis
tonoticethisdecreaseinsensoryreduction,andgetfullycomfortablewithit.
Nowandthen,intermsofMonroe'smetaphor,takeyourtimetolooktotheclearing(yourbody),
whichmayseemsortoffaraway,butit'sstillthere.Youcanofcourseshiftattentioninfocus10,and
startgoingmoreinward(atwhichtimeyouareattentionallyunawareofyourbody),butthekeyis
themutedsensoryperceptionifyoudopayattention.
Thismutedsensoryperceptionofthecutaneoussenseshastobedistinguishedfromnumbnessof
thebodyduetobadcirculation.Whilethesensationsaresimilar,itiseasytotellthedifference.
Whileinfocus10,simplytouchormovethefingersofyourhand,andyouwillfeelyoursenseof
touchquicklyreturning.Incontrast,ifthenumbnesswasduetobadcirculation,itwilltakearound
3060secondsofstimulatingthenervesforyoursenseoftouchtobecomefullyoperational.
Now,somepeopledonotagreewiththisdefinition.Theyholdthattobereallyinfocus10implies
notfeelingthebodyalltogether,whilefeelingsuspendedinavoidwithjustblacknessinfrontof
one'seyes.Iwouldagreewiththatpositionwereitnotthatamutedsenseoftouch,asopposedto
totalabsenceofthesesenses,oftenappearstocoincidewithothercharacteristicsfocus10.
Isupposeawaytosidesteptheissueistosimplyacceptthatphasingoccursonacontinuum,and
thatevenwithinaparticularfocuslevel,allthingsareamatterofdegree.Sorather,thanadoptinga
categoricaldefinitionofthatyoueitherareorarenotinfocus10,let'sjustsaythatfocus10canbe

whileyourmindissimultaneouslyawakeandalertisabrilliantstrokewhichseemstohavemajor
healingimplicationsaswellasprovidingalaunchpadorGatewayformoreadvancedspiritualwork.
Thefeelingisquiteremarkableandquiteattainable;asplitlevelofconsciousness,notunliketheleft
andrighthandsofanadeptpianistorlikeadreamerwhocanwalkintothemundane,terrestrial
world.

Anotherfairlyconsistentearlymarkeroffocus10,althoughnotalwayspresent,isaverycrispand
brightawareness.Thisisnotmerelythesenseofbeingawakeasperthesimplisticdefinitionoffocus
10(bodyasleep/mindawake),butrather,oneismoreawakethaninwakinglife.Ithinkitis
interestinghowtonotehowthisparticularcrispnessoftencomesabout.Quiteoften,thereissudden
senseof"clickingin"or"pluggingin"intothisstate,whichprovidesquiteacontrastwithany
dreamlike,dull,orevennormalstateofawarenessprecedingtheshiftintofocus10.Theshiftmaybe
experiencedeitherconsciouslyoronesuddenly"wakesup"fromadreamlikeordullstate.
Sometimestheshiftmaybeaccompaniedbyimagesorsensationsrepresentingthissuddenshiftin
awarenessifyouwereinadreamlikestatebeforeenteringfocus10.Iamremindedofanincidence
whereIhadspendthewholedaywateringthegarden,whichrequiredmetooftenpullthehoseto
movefromoneareainthegardentoanother.AsIwasdoingafocus10exercisethatevening,and
startedtoshiftintofocus10fromadull,dreamlikestateofmind,thiswasaccompaniedbyasudden
imagewhereIfindmyselfjerkinghardonthewaterhosetomovetoadifferentarea.Atthesame
time,Ifeltmyawarenessaligningitselfwiththefocus10state.Consciousnesswascrispandclear
fromthatpointon.
I'dliketoemphasizehere,however,thatthisspecialcharacteristicoffocus10wherethemindis
extremelycrispandclear,isnotalwayspresent.Sometimes,themindfeelsmerelyawake.However,
thereisstillasenseofincreasedcoherencyandstabilityinone'sawarenessascomparedtonormal
wakinglife.Duringthosetimes,thatcrispnesswaslackingfromthefocus10equationIhavefoundit

fareasiertoopenmyselfuptovisualscenes,whichseemtobemoremeaningfulthantheusualnon
sensicalthoughtsandimagesaswedriftintosleep.Isuspectthelackofcrispinessmayberelatedto
physicalormentaltirednessinterferingwithfocus10state.Soexpectthisparticularcharacteristicto
varyquiteabit,anddonottrytoholdontoiteither.Afterall,youhavetotipyourtoesintodeeper
regionsnowandthenandthatmaymeanlosingsomelucidityandalertness.However,donottiptoe
toodeepintothisarea,sinceyouwillfallasleep,andallthetransitiontofocus10andfurtherare
preferablytobeexperiencedfullylucidandaware.
Isuspectthatmostwillbeabletoreachtheseearlymarkersoffocus10(includingthemildsensory
reductioninthecutaneoussenses)inafairlyconsistentmannerwithrelativeeaseinthecourseof,
let'ssay,anythingrangingfromonetotwentyhoursofpractice.Hence,whenyoureadreportson
thefocus10state,thesepreliminarymarkersaremostfrequentlymentioned.However,youareonly
atthebeginningofafullfledgedfocus10stateatthisstage,andthesubsequentstagestendto
requirealotmorepractice.
Infact,Ican'toveremphasizethefollowingenough:
Eachtimeyouthinkyoucan'tpossiblygodeeperintothefocus10state,andyetyoucontinueyour
practice,youwillbeprovenwrongoverandoveragain.
Therealdeal:Adeepfocus10
Adeeperfocus10representsafurtherphaseshiftawayfromthephysical,whichbasicallyinvolvesa
morepronouncedreductioninthecutaneoussenses.Youwillknowyouarewellonyourway
towardsadeeperfocus10whenthepositionofyourlimbsisnotentirelycleartoyou.Forexample,
youmayhavethefeelingthatyourarmisbentratherthanstraightalongyourbody(ifthatisits
actualposition).Iwouldn'timmediatelyassumeherethatyouarepartially"outofbody".Rather,I
wouldconsideritasideeffectofthereductioninthecutaneoussensescreatingvariousillusionsas
totheexactpositionofyourlimbs.Sufficetosay,thatoncethesesensationsoccuryouareclosetoa
fullfledgedfocus10.However,onceagain,it'samatterofkeepingyourawarenessflexibleand
receptiveformatterstoprogressfurther:
Fixatingyourawarenessonaparticularobject(likeyourbody)isnotgoingtodomuch.Awareness
needsthefreedomtomovetobeabletogoanywhere.Goinginwardisanexcellentwayto
establishingthatfreedom.Sodon'tkeepyourawarenesscontinuouslyfixatedinanyoneparticular
spot(whethertheblacknessinfrontofyoureyesoryourbody),butstarttomoveintothe"expanse
ofyourmind"inafreefloatingtypeofway.Ifatanypoint'bodily'vibrationsorotherenergetic
sensationsoccurwhichrequireyourattention,youcanalwaysreturntothat"bodilypointofview".
Asthecutaneoussensesretreatmoreandmore,youmayquitesuddenlystarttofeelyouthatyou
onlyexistinyour"head".Iftherewereanyproblemswithobsessiveswallowingorbeingunableto
nolongerattendtoyourbreathingthenthisshouldnolongerposeaprobleminthisdeeperfocus
10.Atthispoint,yourbodyistrulyasleepintermsofitssenseoftouch.Thelessenedsenseofbeing
inthebodytendstobringalongafeelingof"beinginthehead"andassuch,sometimesthe"head
space"mayfeelsomewhatenlarged.Youcanstillfocusonyourspatialpositionandwhatever
remainsofthesensationofyourbody,butdonotstayfixatedonit.
Thisawarenessofalmostsolelyexisting"inthehead"withlittleawarenessofthebodycanquite
suddenlycomeoveryou.Ifyouareawareofmovingintofocus10fullyandcompletely,these
transitionsintodifferentstagesofconsciousnessareoftencharacterizedbyanarrowingorfunneling
ofattentionfollowedbyasenseofconsciousnessstabilizingafterwardstowardstheblacknessin
frontofyoureyes.Thisisfairlymildinthecaseofmovingintofocus10,butitispossibleforexample
tomovestraightfromthewakingstatetofocus12whileskippingeverythinginbetweeninwhich

casethesensationsaremorepronounced.
Onceyoureachafullfledgedfocus10,thereshouldbethesensethatyourentireconsciousness
feelsmorefarmorechannneledandfocusedthanitbefore.Youwilllikelyappreciatetheterm'out
ofphase'onceyouencounterthisstate.
Rememberthattheexpansionofconsciousnesscanalsobeexperiencedinmanymoreindirect
symbolicforms(risingandfalling,expansionofbodyboundaries,etc.)Soanothercharacteristicofa
deepfocus10thatmayattimesmanifestrevolvesaroundthelessenedinfluenceofthecutanenous
sensesinone'sperceptionofbodyboundaries.Then,naturally,asenseofnonalignmentwiththe
physicalbodymayalsooccuraswellasmovingsensationssuchasrising,falling,shrinkingand
expanding.Inaddition,theremaybelessenedsenseofbeinginthebodyasifoneisslightlyaboveit
(orbelow).
Despitethesedeepermanifestationsoffocus10,imagesdonotalwaysautomaticallyoccurinthis
state,orothertypesofsensations.Theblacknessinfrontofyoureyesisnotreallydifferentfrom
thatwhenyouwouldcloseyoureyesrightnow.Thiswouldindicatethatalthoughallthecutaneous
senseshavealmostcompletelycutoff,thevisualsensesarestillfullyactivated.Hence,youwillstill
havesomeoverallsenseofyourspatialposition,ratherthanfloatingallovertheplace.
Itneedstobesaidthatadeepfocus10istrulyquiteadetachedexperiencefromthephysical,and
toooftenpeopleassumehavingbeentherewhiletheywerenot.Infact,mostsuccesfulprojectors
oftenpassthroughitwithoutholdingstillorrecognizingthisintermediaryarea.Thefeelingisalmost
likebeinginvirgin,unspoiledterritoryeventhoughthoughtprocessesmaycontinueasusual.
Itisnotuncommonthatyouwillfindyourselfunabletophaseoutfurtherinfocus10,despite
recognizingbeinginquitedeep,andatthethresholdofsomethingelse.Ifyougottothisstatebeing
tired,yetbeingabletoholdyourbalanceinitalertandlucid,youmayfindsomeofyournormal
mentalfacultiesmissing.Thesewillbemorepresentwithcontinuedpractice,andeventuallyyouwill
starttosensebeingonthethresholdoffocus12amoreexpandedstateofawareness.
Now,thesesignpostsofadeepfocus10provideagoodplatformexploringindifferentdirections,
butinthefocus10stateasdiscussedsofarthevisualsensesarestillverymuchactive(eventhough
youreyesareclosed),andthisbringsustovisualperceptioninfocus10.
Visualperceptionsinfocus10
Sofar,Ihavefocusedonquite'normal'sensationsinfocus10.Thatisbecause,especiallyintheearly
stages,itisperfectlypossibletobeinfocus10withoutexperiencinganyextraordinaryvisual
sensations.Althoughitmaynotalwaysbeeasytohavevisualperceptions,itiscertainlypossibleto
havethem,andmucheasierinfocus10thanfromaC1stateofmind.Iwouldhoweversuggestto
startdealingmorewithvisualimageryonceyoucanholdadeepfocus10,sincetheriskoffalling
asleepisquitehighotherwise(andtheimagesaremorelikedreamvignettesratherthananything
else).Also,you'relikelytomissthefocus10state(moreorlesslocatedbetweenthewakingstate
andnonlucidminidreams)alltogetherbypassingthroughitsoquicklyyouwon'tevennotice.
Withinadeepfocus10stateaslightphaseshiftmaybefeltthatiseversosubtleasyoustarttoalign
yourselfwithvisualperceptions.Haveyoueverbeentossingandrollinginbedtryingtogettosleep
whensuddenlyallthementalchatterandedginessseemstocometoasuddenholdandwhereit
suddenlyseemsveryeasytoperceivevisualimageswithoutlosingalertness?Thatsenseofeaseof
perceivingvisualimageryisthesubtlephaseshiftwithinadeepfocus10thatI'mtalkingabout.You
willlikelyencountertheseimagesquitenaturallywhenyourelaxyourawarenessabitinadeep
focus10.Ratherthanstaringintotheblacknessinfrontofyoureyesfullyaware,justrelaxyour

awarenessinafuzzytypeofwayalmostlikewatchingfromoutthecornersofeyesfiguratively
speaking.
Onceyouareabletoholdadeepfocus10anactiveroletowardstheperceptionoftheseimagesby
increasingyourinteractionwiththemisadvisable.However,rememberthatthisactiveroleisavery
fuzzy,softandgentlemovementofconsciousness.Anythingelsewillnotnecessarilythrowyouout
ofthefocus10state,butallyouwillseeisblacknessinfrontofyoureyesinafixatedtypeofway.
Whatwouldbeyourfavoriteperception?Somepersonalfavoritesofminearelookingattrees,large
scalenaturescenes,lakes,seascapes,andbeautifulmansionsandhouses.Whileinfocus10
(whetheritisalightordeepfocus10)startplayingaroundwithseeingyourfavoriteimagesinyour
mind'seye.Don'tcreatethesceneintermsofcreativevisualization.Youdon't"build"theimage.
Rather,youtryto"see"afavoriteimageforonlyaverybriefperiodoftimeasifitcomesoutof
nowhere.Donottrytoholdit.Ifit'svague(likeforexampleseeingahalfformedimageofalake
surroundedbymountains)thenyoudonottrytomakeitmorevivid.Getonwiththenextone.
Soonerorlater,ifyousticktothisprocessyouwillreallyperceiveaversionofyourfavoriteimage.
Onethatreallydidcomeoutofnowhere!Expecttobesurprisedwiththedetailandbeautyofthese
images.Theymaybesnapshotsatfirst,butonceyouhaveseen,forexampleatree,thatoriginates
notfromyourmind,butfromelsewhere,thisexercisewillbecometremendouslyfunandexciting.
Inyourpracticetheremaybeayoyoeffect.Youmayshiftintosemiluciditywhereavagueimage
appears,andassoonasyoustarttonotice,you'llshiftbacktowhereyoustartedfeelingfullylucid
onceagain.However,atonepointyouwillstarttoexperienceseveralthings.First,itwillbecome
easierandeasierforyoutorelaxyourawarenesstotheextentthatyouexperiencevisualimages.
Secondly,youwillfindthatyou'llbecomeincreasinglylucidduringtheexperienceoftheseimages.
Notaslucidasyoumightlike,butyouwillknowyou'regettingsomewherewhenyoustartto
experiencesomelevelofsynchronicitybetweenyourintent,thoughtsandemotionsontheone
hand,andthevisualscenesontheotherhand.Thatisthesceneswillstarttonaturallyfollowyour
thoughtpatterns,emotions,andconcerns.Often,particularquestionsthatareonyourmindwillfind
themselvesansweredinthevisualscenesinfrontofyou.
Increasingly,you'llbeabletoseethevisualimagesforlongerperiods,whileatthesamemaintaining
astrongersenseofselfwhileseeingthem.Youmayalsofindyourselfshiftinginandoutthevisual
imagerymoreeasilyandmorequickly.Ofcourse,thesevisualimagesoccuronlywhilerelaxingyour
awarenessandwithoutdoinganythinginparticularto"get"them.Soifyourattentionalfocusin
focus10isontheblacknessinfrontofyoureyesorontheremainingsensorysensationsinyour
body,youareunlikelytoexperienceanything.Instead,youneedtoforgetabouteverythingphysical
forawhile.
Whatareyoureallydoinghereinthisprocess?Whatyouaredoingistakinganactiveapproachand
realinteresttowardsinneractivitythatisseeminglyunrelatedtoyourself.Inotherwords,youare
creatingafunctionalunitbetweenyourwakingmindandnonphysicalenergies.Theimagesmaynot

exaggeratedcharacteristicoffocus10.ItseemedIwaswronghowever,sincethissynergydoes
becomemoreandmoreapparentwhenyoustarttorelaxyourawarenessinfocus10ratherthan
keepingitinafixatedposition.Granted,thistypeofsynergyisgenerally(especiallyinthebeginning
ofpractice)notasdramaticinfocus10asinotherfocuslevels;inparticularthatoffocus21where
synergybetweenthoughtandactionismajorcharacteristicofthatstate.However,itiswisetomake
anearlystartwithbuildingandpracticingthissynergyinfocus10,whichwillserveyouwellin
subsequentfocuslevels.Thatis,becomeusedtotheideathatstraythoughtsmaysometimesresult
inimmediateperceptionsinfocus10,andslowlylearntodifferentiatebetweenthoughtandintent,
sothatyouwillnotbesweptallovertheplaceonceyoureachhigherfocuslevels.Focus10isagood,
andcomfortableplacetostart.
Wheredotheseimagescomefrom?Itdepends.Ifyouhaven'tsetanyparticularintent,thenthe
imagesoffocus10areusuallyareflectionofongoingconcernsandthoughts.Thisisinitselfahighly
interestingphenomenonandmuchcanbelearnedfromitifyourealizetheconnectionbetweenyour
thoughtsandperceptions.Ifyouareunawareofthisconnection,youwillnotonlymisinterpretalot
ofyourperceptions,butalsofeelwithoutcontrol.
Becreative.Focus10isexcellentplacetoovercomefearsaslongasyourealizeyouareincontrol!
Ifyouaskspecificquestionsexpecttheimagestobefarmoremeaningfulandpotentiallyvery
informative.Thefocuslevelaremerelyyourreferencepointfromwhichyoudofurtherexploring.
Forexample,aftertheimageshaveoccurred,whatisthestateyoufindyourselfin?Usually,youwill
findyourselfbackinfocus10.Sooverall,youhaveperceivedimagesbyatleastgoingfromandback
tofocus10,wherevertheseactualimagesmaybe"located".
Onelastaspectofengagingyourselfinvisualimagerydeservestobementioned.Donotbesurprised
ifyoufindyourselfinfocus12ratherthantheusualsensationsoffocus10afterhavinggonedeep
intoavisualexperience.Infact,whenstartingtoalignyourselfwithnonphysicalvisualimagery,itis
notuncommontoexperiencesomemildstroboscopiclighteffectsorothersensations.Theseeffects
arenotsurprising,sinceinmyopinionfocus12isassociatedwiththeshutdownofthevisualsensory
modality(inadditiontheshutdownofthosesensorymodalitiescharacteristicoffocus10.Assuch,
theseeffectsareyetanotherrepresentationofachangeinconsciousness,whichmayoccurwhen
yougointoprolongedperiodsofviewingvisualimageryinfocus10.Alternatively,youmayfind
yourselfbackinbackinfocus10staringintothe2Dblacknessinfrontofyou,yetdiscoveringthe
focus10statehasdeepenedconsiderably.
Sothepracticeofvisualperceptioninfocus10servesseveralpurposes.Beyondthefactthatthereis
alotofguidanceandanswerstoyourquestionsinthisstate,itmayleadyoutomovefurtheraway
fromthevisualsensesandtapintofocus12.However,keepinmindthatthisisusuallyarather
accidentalwayofenteringfocus12.Eventually,youwouldwanttoenterfocus12withouttricks,and
smoothlyglidefromadeepfocus10(withoutthehelpofvisualimagery)into12bymereintent.
Obviously,therearealotofotherperceptionsbesidesthevisualinfocus10thatareequally

Besidesvisualimages,thegatewaymanual(1980)makesseveralbroaddistinctionsbetweenthe
differenttypesofnonphysicalenergiesthatmaybeencounteredinfocus10.Themostcommonof
thesearekinestheticsensations.AsIhavementionedbefore,Iconsidermostofthesesensationsto
betheresultofthereductionininputfromthecutaneoussenses.Iamambivalentaboutthe
existenceofanenergybodybeingresponsibleforsuchsensations,andIdonotthinkenergyworkis
useful.Thelinkbetweenalossofthesenseoftouchand"energybodysensations"issimplytoo
obvioustoignore.Forexample,doesitnotmakealotofsensethatinadeepfocus10youwill
sometimesexperiencefallingandrisingsensationsifthecutaneoussensesarenolongerthereto
firmlyputyouinonespotinspace?Anyways,feelfreetodisagree.Atleastwecanallagreeonthe
sensationsifnottheinterpretation.
ThefollowingisthedescriptionofkinestheticsensationsbytheMonroeInstitute:
"Onemethodofperceptionistofeeldifferenceskinesthetically(sensationsthatare,orseemtobe,
physical).Payattentiontoyourbodyandfeelsubtlesensations.Thesesensationsmightfeellike
motion:risingandfalling,rocking,slidingandtipping.Youmightfeel"electric"sensations:tinglingor
vibrations.Perhapsyoumightfeeltwitches,pulsing,pressure,orchangesintemperature."(Gateway

IthinkthatmostpeoplewhohavepracticedOBEsarefamiliarwiththesesensations,oratleasthave
heardaboutnumeroustimes.However,itisworthheretomentionthatthemore"complete"
kinestheticsensationstendtooccurinadeeperfocus10,whileinalighterfocus10,thesesensations
tendtobemorelocalizedandofshorterduration.However,theyarenotalwayspresentinfocus10.
Kinestheticsensationsthatareofparticularinterestarethosethatinvolveacompletedissolutionof
normalbodyboundaries.Thatis,theformationofacompletelynewbodyboundarythatformsan
eggshapedformaroundthebody.Frommyunderstanding,thisisnotthesocalled"secondbody"
butratherafieldthatseemstosurroundthephysicalbody.Itisamostpeculiarfeelingwhereone
seemstobefloatinginsideabigballoonandones"edges"seemstobelocatedaroundafeetaway
fromtheactualbody.This"body"enlargementeffecthasbeenreportedseveraltimesbypeoplein
thesleepingboothattheMonroeInstitute(Atwater,2001).Inmyopinion,thisphenomenonis
merelyanindirectsymbolizedexperienceoftheexpansionofconsciousness.Alternatively,likemany
otherkinestheticsensationsthewholeexperiencemayinpartbetheresultofareductioninthe
cutaneoussenseswherebodyboundariesmayshiftintoadifferentform.SoIwouldn'tworrytoo
muchifyounevercomeacrossit,sinceitseemsperfectlypossibletoreachhigherfocuslevels
withoutexperiencingthisphenomenon.
Anothertypeofnonphysicalsensationarecalled"intuitiveperceptions".Thefollowing:
``Gatewayparticipantsoftenreportintuitiveperceptions:asuddenawareness,agestalt,awhole
knowing,or"thoughtball"asonepersondelightfullydescribedit"(Gatewaymanual,1980).
Now,theseintuitiveperceptionsarereallyinterestingandtheycontinuetobeheavilyignoredin
mostOBEliterature,whiletheyseemtooperatetheretoalargeextent.Ipersonallyhavestartedto
callthemInnerSensePercepts(ISPs)forlackofabetterterm.Theyaremorecommoninfocus12
thaninfocus10,buttheydefinitelyoccurineitherstate.Often,infocus10,theycoincidewith
otherstypesofperceptionsuchasvisualimagery.AnexampleofanISPwouldbeasituationwhereI
suddenlybecamepartofadreamlikevisualscenewithalotofpeoplearoundme,andIreceivedthe
ISP:"Youareneveralone".It'sanicemessagetoget(unlessyou'retheparanoidtype).Forthose
interestedinmoreinformationinthissubjectIadvisetotakenoteoftheword"percept"inMonroe's
books,andyouwillseehowoftentheseintuitiveperceptionsoccurintheOBEstate.

Lastly,therearetheauditoryperceptions.Thesesensationsaremorecharacteristicoffocus12inmy
experience.Usually,Idonotfindtheauditorysensestobereducedtotheextentthatauditorythat
"nonphysical"auditoryperceptionischaracteristicoffocus10.However,despitethegeneralabsence
ofaconsistentreductionintheauditorysensesinfocus10,doexpectauditorysensationsto
occasionallyoccurinthisstate(usuallyaspartofvisualscenes),andbecomemoreprominentin
focus12.Sotocompletethissection,hereisthedescriptioninthegatewaymanualofauditory
perceptions:
"Anauditoryperceptionmaymanifestasverbalmessages,voices,orimpressionsofvoices.Itmay

BeforeconcludingthispaperIthinkalittleinformationonfocus12andtheotherfocuslevelsisin
order,becauseitislikelyyouwillautomaticallystumbleuponitwhilepracticingfocus10.Ithinkit
shouldbeclearthatthemajorpositionofthecurrentpaperisthatfocus10involvesareductionin
sensoryinputfromcutaneoussenseswhilemostothersensesarestilllargelyoperational.Hence,it
shouldcomeasnosurprisethatoncethevisualsensesstarttoshutdownanotherphaseshiftcanbe
expectedevenfurtherremovedfromthephysical.Iwouldliketonotehowever,thatconceptualizing
theemergenceoffocus12solelyastheshutdownofthevisualsensesislikelyasimplification.
Perhapsmoreaccurately,itshouldbeconceptualizedasaperceptualshiftincontext,whereone's
spatialpositionisnolongerasstronglydeterminedbyaspatialvisualsystemthatnormallylocatesus
firmlyinthephysicalworld.
