SHOULD INDIAS STATES BE CONSOLIDATED INTO FIVE

FEDERAL REGIONS
India is a country which is known for its diversity. As Muhammad Ali Jinnah once said, India is not a
nation, nor a country. It is a subcontinent of nationalities. With 29 states, 780 languages, population
of 1.25 billion and a humungous range of flora and fauna, India is a true example of unity in diversity.
To consolidate all this, smaller provinces are created. Now the question arises whether to incorporate
these smaller regions into 5 major clusters. Some people argue that recapitulating will help in
development of the region. However I beg to differ. I believe this system will escalate problems in the
governance of these areas.
In most cases, the cities those are near to a state capital, are more developed economically and
technologically. Naturally they will be more prosperous than the city that is far the capital. For
instance, regions near Mumbai are much more developed than other cities that are on the borders of
Maharashtra. In the same way, the NCR (National Capital Region) surrounding Delhi has grown
drastically in the last decade. So, the opportunity given to rural areas surrounding to expand and
utilize their resources proper
Furthermore, these state capital turns into a chaos when people are migrated from different smaller
cities far from the capital in seek of opportunities. Delhi with a population of 9.88 million has about
16.4% of migrants, whereas in case of Mumbai, 15.1% of total population of about 11.98 million is
migrant.
On the other hand, language barrier will also create hindrance while supervising these provinces. We
can even see the difference in language if we go to different places within the state as of now. Now if
you consolidate a larger region, the language gap will create havoc.
In conclusion, development is effective if the regions for governance is small. After segregation of big
states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Utter Pradesh, the divided states now are flourishing and
growing at a great rate. So dividing India into 5 big provinces will imbalance the administration and
sooner or later will face the repercussions.
