*Dear Sparky,

I am having trouble with students not being very nice to me. At
times it makes me want to be mean back. What should I do?

From,

Frustrated Student

Dear Frustrated Student,

Treat others the way that you want to be treated! Its always
better to be nice than mean. Be the bigger person!

From,

Sparky

*Dear Sparky,

Sometimes I am frustrated because my class at times is very
talkative. They keep getting the whole class in trouble, even me.
What can I do to stop losing my recess for things that I didnt do?

From,

No More Recess

Dear No More Recess,

It is always important to make sure you are following the ASU
Prep Way. It sounds like you already do a great job at this, but
help remind your classmates to Work Hard, Be Kind and Be
Smart! Hopefully your classmates will learn from your examples.
I hope you get your recess back soon!

From,

Sparky

(Our principal Dr. Mesa-Lema wanted to become a principal because she loves teaching teachers how
to teach. A little fun fact about Dr. Mesa-Lema is that she was a teacher for 11 years. She loves being a
principal. She thinks uniforms help the students focus and lead us all to success. Dr. Mesa-Lema is an
amazing leader! She will lead us all to success. She wants us to accomplish amazing things in our lives. In
conclusion, we should all look up to her and work towards achieving the goals she has set for us!

The first football game for ASU prep is August

28th in Tuscon. Every football game will be on
a Friday. The players practice Monday
through Thursday. Practice is at least 2 hours
everyday, and between 7 to 10 hours a week
from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Coach Spence and Coach Evans played in the
NFL. Both coaches look forward to football
season every year. The coaches are very
excited for the season to start. Coach Spence
said he wants each player to get better in the
classroom and on the field. Obviously we are
going to win every game and the
championships.

On August 18, 2015 I had the chance to interview Keonna

from the ASU Prep Junior High Volleyball Team. This
year 5th-8th graders were able to try out. Our 5th grade
teacher Ms. Long is the coach for the Junior High
Volleyball team. There were 32 girls that tried out and
only 13 spots for the playing team. Also something that
changed this year was that Coach Long took additional
girls to be on a Practice Team to allow the girls to gain the
basic skills on how to play the game. I asked her what
made her want to play volleyball? She answered, I really
like being athletic. I also asked her how long she has
been playing volleyball for? She responded, Three years
so far on the same ASU Prep team! Being part of a team
is great! Finally, I asked her what position she was
playing? Her exact words were, I dont have one, but
Coach Long is training me to be a blocker! The first
Junior High Volleyball game will be September 3, 2015 at
5:00 PM in our gym! The team plays 10 games this
season, 5 at home and 5 away. During practice the girls
work on their skills of ball control, drills to get better,
serving, and conditioning. Good Luck Lady Devils!

We were able to interview two high school students to see what our future is going to look like. We were
wondering what to expect. We had the opportunity to interview a Senior, Kaylyn, and a junior, Cynthia
about what we wanted to know. They warned us that in high school they have to listen to the teachers. They
need to make sure that they respect and take care of all the materials used in class. High school students
arent allowed to leave their classrooms, talk while the teacher is talking, curse, and use their cell phones
during class. Some teachers even require them to turn their phones completely o. Next we asked them how
much homework they have. Kaylyn responded, I have 9 pieces of homework right now. Cynthia said, I
have 5 pieces of homework. We feel that this is a lot of homework. We wanted to know what happens when
they dont turn their homework in when its due? Cynthia and Kaylyn both informed us, If you dont
turn in your homework your grade can drop from an E to an F quickly. We noticed that when we get
into trouble and when high schoolers get into trouble we have the same consequence. We both serve lunch
detention. Samirah asked Cynthia, Are your assignments complicated? She responded by saying, Yes,
they are complicated. Our teachers make us think for the answers, they dont give them to us. If we are
absent or are not paying attention in class it makes the assignment even more dicult. Finally, we asked
the both students, Would you rather be in a higher grade or a lower grade and why? Kaylyn said, I
would rather be in a higher grade. This way I will be in college and have a little more freedom. Cynthia
said, I would rather be in a lower grade so I can redo my bad grades. These were all great responses and
they help us see what to expect in high school!
